Google Health app combines fitness, sleep and health data
With the new Google Health app, Google is pursuing the goal of presenting health data in a much clearer and more intelligent way. Instead of scattered information, users receive a central platform that brings together activities, sleep analysis, vital signs and fitness data. The previous Fitbit app remains the technical basis, but has been given a completely new name, a fresh design and additional functions.
The new structure of the application is particularly striking. Four central tabs – “Today”, “Fitness”, “Sleep” and “Health” – are designed to simplify access to important information. At the same time, the dashboards can be customized so that frequently used values remain directly visible. These include steps, cardio exertion, heart rate and sleep quality.

The analysis functions have also been expanded. The app synchronizes data from various sources and recognizes correlations between activities, recovery and general health values. This makes it easier to track progress over the long term and identify trends.
Google is also increasingly focusing on an open ecosystem. The Google Health app supports numerous third-party services via Health Connect, Apple Health and its own APIs. Fitness data from apps such as Peloton or nutrition entries from MyFitnessPal can therefore be brought together centrally. This should be particularly interesting for users who previously had to use several apps in parallel.
AI functions and Google Health Coach take center stage
A key component of the new platform is the integrated Google Health Coach, which was developed using Gemini technology. The AI should not only display data, but also actively support fitness and health. In the “Today” section, the digital coach provides up-to-date insights and recommendations, while personalized training suggestions are provided in the Fitness tab.
Another new feature is the ability to create and save training plans using natural language. This should make operation much more intuitive than with traditional fitness apps. In the sleep section, the app analyzes sleep patterns and helps users to better understand their nightly recovery. In addition, the health section clearly summarizes important vital signs.
Alongside the new app, Google is also expanding its range of hardware. The platform is particularly closely interlinked with the Pixel Watch and the new Google Fitbit Air. The particularly lightweight fitness tracker was specially developed for long-term use and is designed to record health data around the clock. Additional coaching and analysis functions are available in combination with a Google Health Premium subscription.
In terms of data protection, Google reiterates that health and fitness data will not be used for personalized advertising. Users retain control over stored information and can delete data or deactivate individual functions at any time.
Conclusion
With the new Google Health app, Google is bundling its fitness and health services to a greater extent than before and combining them with AI-supported functions. The platform offers a modernized interface, deeper analyses and better integration of different devices and apps. In particular, the combination of Fitbit technology, Gemini AI and personalized recommendations could make the app one of the most important health platforms in the Android ecosystem in the long term. The automatic rollout will start on May 19 for existing Fitbit users.
