Google Pixel Watch 4 with satellite SOS in Europe – Pixel Watch 3 gets gesture control via Feature Drop

Google is significantly expanding its smartwatch platform with the latest Drop feature. The Google Pixel Watch 4 gets the long-awaited satellite connection for emergency calls in Europe, while the Google Pixel Watch 3 receives a new gesture control, which was previously reserved for the newer model. The update is complemented by convenience functions such as Express Pay, earthquake warnings and enhanced security features – a noticeable increase in functionality for both generations.

  • Pixel Watch 4: Satellite SOS now also available in Europe
  • Pixel Watch 3: New gesture control via double tap and wrist rotation
  • Express Pay enables contactless payment without opening the Wallet app
  • New safety features such as earthquake warnings and smartphone distance alarm

Google Pixel Watch 4 gets satellite SOS for Europe

Google is closing an important gap by activating the satellite emergency call in Europe. Until now, the feature was only available in the USA, but now the Google Pixel Watch 4 can also make an emergency call in this country in the event of an emergency, regardless of the mobile network or connected smartphone. This significantly increases safety, especially during outdoor activities, when traveling or in rural areas.

Technically, the watch relies on a satellite connection when neither Wi-Fi nor a mobile network is available. Google is thus clearly positioning itself in competition with premium smartwatches that offer similar emergency functions. The implementation is particularly relevant for Europe, as emergency call infrastructures and regulatory requirements are more complex than in individual markets.

The update also introduces an earthquake warning function. This informs wearers of impending tremors at an early stage, provided that the relevant data is available. Even if such warnings can vary from region to region, the integration shows that wearables are increasingly being seen as a safety center on the wrist.

Pixel Watch 3 gets gesture control and new convenience features

At the same time, the Google Pixel Watch 3 is getting a function that was originally introduced with the newer generation: gesture control. Calls can be answered, timers started or the camera of a connected Pixel smartphone triggered with a quick double tap of the thumb and index finger of the hand wearing the watch. A twisting movement of the wrist can be used to scroll through messages.

The operating concept is reminiscent of solutions from the premium segment, such as the Apple Watch Series 9, and reduces dependence on the touchscreen or the digital crown. Especially in situations where both hands are not free, there is clear added value.

Another new feature is “Express Pay”. This allows payments or compatible public transport tickets to be made directly without having to open the Wallet app manually. Security-conscious users can deactivate the function if required. In addition, the smartwatch will inform you in future if the paired smartphone has been left behind – a small but useful improvement for everyday use.

Conclusion: More security and smarter operation via update

The latest feature drop noticeably strengthens both models. The Google Pixel Watch 4 gains a key security feature with the satellite SOS function in Europe. At the same time, gesture control makes the Pixel Watch 3 more modern and convenient in everyday use. The update is being rolled out gradually and is automatically available for compatible models.
