The rollout of the new Google Wallet app has started. Already in May, the company announced that it would redesign the Google Pay app and equip it with additional features under a new (old) name.

Google Wallet: rollout of Pay successor app starts

The transformation of Google Pay to Google Wallet, which was announced months ago, is slowly but surely taking place. The company has begun rolling out the new Android app. Early users such as Mishaal Rahman, for example, are reporting via Twitter notifications of the rollout.

“The Google Pay app is now Wallet. You can do everything in it that you’ve been used to, only easier,” the pop-up reads.

In addition to a new app icon and name, Wallet also boasts a brand new user interface and many additional features, and has been increasingly distributed to users around the world since July 20. The new Wallet app has also started rolling out on my Google Pixel 6 Pro (our review).

Google Wallet: What are the new features?

From Google Pay, the new Wallet app takes, for example, already deposited cards and tickets. You can also specify whether all or only individual cards and tickets should be displayed.

You also have the option of automatically importing cards and tickets from Gmail. To do this, simply activate the “Smart features and personalizations in other Google products” function in the Mail app under the respective account(s) in the settings.

Also new is the option that Apple users already know from their corresponding counterpart. From now on, not only payment cards can be added, but also public transportation tickets (though only in the U.S. so far) or loyalty point programs like Payback, Ikea, Saturn or the BahnBonus card from Deutsche Bahn.

You can also add gift cards – for example, from Amazon, Ikea, Google, dm and many more – directly to Wallet and use them from the app at the corresponding store or retailer.

Car keys, student IDs or vaccination certificates should also be able to be added in this way. In the further course of the year, even driver’s licenses are to be added, as well as hotel keys and office cards at an unspecified time. All information about the new Google Wallet can be found on the overview page of Google.
