Hetzner: Web hoster increases its prices immensely

Server farms consume one thing above all: lots of electricity. And like pretty much everything else, electricity is becoming more and more expensive. So it’s hardly surprising that the price of services for data centers of this kind is rising. Hetzner is no exception. With price increases of up to 30 percent, however, some customers’ jaws are sure to drop.

Consequence of rising electricity prices

The trend of rising energy prices is a phenomenon that can be traced back to the Corona crisis. As many industries slumped, so did the demand for electricity. Accordingly, there was initially an extreme drop in the price of electricity. But when the assembly lines of the factories started rolling again, the electricity producers, for their part, had to crank up production again. This marked the beginning of a turnaround and electricity prices literally exploded. An end to the problem does not yet seem to be in sight. And so electricity prices in this country have now risen by 40 percent in some cases. Many companies, such as Hetzner, can no longer bear the burden and are forced to pass on the additional costs to their customers.

The German web hosting provider comments on the problem as follows:

“Please note that due to the current electricity price development in Germany, we are actively adjusting the prices for our products within the server exchange. This step is necessary, since currently with a not insignificant number of servers the coverage of the running costs by the monthly rent is not given.”

Community is infuriated

The whole thing became known through an exchange of customers of the service provider. In various forums such as Reddit, these exchanged about the increased prices. The focus is not only on the complaint about the price increase itself. Instead, Hetzner seems to differentiate between customers. Almost everything is represented here, up to a maximum price increase of 30 percent. The server exchange is supposed to be the first of these. In a way, this is Hetzner’s “used goods trade”. Here you can get hold of old server generations for little money. At least this has always been the case. With the price increase, the costs are namely no longer too attractive.

Price increase for now only in Germany

Initially, the higher costs at the server exchange will probably come exclusively to German customers. So Hetzner itself confirms on Twitter that one will not demand such surcharges in servers outside Germany. What should cause customers to breathe a sigh of relief is the prospect that the costs will also return to normal. Hetzner promises that as the price of electricity falls, prices on the server exchange will also fall again.

Hetzner is unlikely to remain an isolated case

Running a server farm eats up lots of electricity. So it’s only a matter of time before other webhosters buckle and their prices rise accordingly. The consequences could become a real problem, especially for small companies. After all, they depend on an Internet presence from a marketing point of view.
