Homey launches self-hosted server: Full smart home control on your own hardware

Dutch smart home specialist Athom has introduced the Homey Self-Hosted Server, a new software solution that brings the operating system of the popular Homey Pro to its own hardware for the first time. The company is targeting advanced users who want to host their smart home environment themselves and retain complete control over their infrastructure. The offering promises the same range of functions as the Homey Pro devices – only more flexible and independent.

  • Runs on your own hardware (e.g. Raspberry Pi, PC, NAS, Docker).
  • Supports Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth LE, 433 MHz and infrared with Homey Bridge.
  • Offers over 50,000 device integrations and Homey-typical features such as Flow, Insights and Energy.
  • Subscription for $4.99/month or lifetime license for $149.

Flexible hosting thanks to broad platform support

The self-hosted server brings the complete Homey experience to almost any system. Whether Raspberry Pi, Windows PC, macOS, Linux, Docker container, Synology or QNAP NAS – according to Athom, the installation can be realized anywhere that Linux can run. Homey is thus opening up its platform to power users who were previously reliant on dedicated hardware such as Homey Pro.

When it comes to connectivity, Athom focuses on openness: the software communicates with devices in the LAN, via the cloud or Matter out of the box. Thread devices are also compatible if a corresponding Thread Border Router is available. Thanks to support for Modbus-TCP, KNX-IP and numerous local APIs, the self-hosted server also covers professional installation environments – from smart home enthusiasts to complex automation in the home or office.

More wireless standards via Homey Bridge

If you also want to control Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth LE, 433 MHz or infrared devices, you can pair the Self-Hosted Server with a Homey Bridge. This is available separately for 69 euros and considerably extends the local wireless coverage. Thanks to the so-called satellite mode support, several bridges can also be placed in the home network to optimize the range in larger buildings.

This makes the software-only approach not only an open, but also a scalable solution – ideal for individual smart home architectures or experimental setups based on existing hardware.

Complete Homey functionality without restrictions

Athom emphasizes that the Self-Hosted Server is functionally equivalent to Homey Pro. This means that users can also integrate over 50,000 devices from more than 1,000 brands and create automated routines using the familiar Homey Flow and Advanced Flow tools. Functions such as Homey Energy, Homey Insights and customizable dashboards are also available.

At the same time, the solution integrates all Homey cloud services, including remote access, app store access, over-the-air updates, cloud-based APIs and voice control options via common assistance systems. Homey thus combines the best of both worlds: local control with cloud convenience.

Price, availability and conclusion

The Homey Self-Hosted Server is now available worldwide. To get started, Athom offers a free 30-day trial period. Afterwards, the service can be subscribed to for USD 4.99 per month or purchased as a one-off lifetime license for USD 149.

With this introduction, Athom is significantly expanding the Homey platform – away from a pure hardware connection and towards a flexible, software-based solution. For smart home enthusiasts, the self-hosted model sends a strong signal: maximum control, high customizability and the familiar ease of use of the Homey ecosystem in an open format.
