Honor introduces first in-house foldable

Just in time for the start of the year, Honor surprises the technology world with a new smartphone. However, the Magic V presented by the former Huawei subsidiary is by no means to be a simple smartphone in the classic form factor. Instead, the Chinese company now wants to enter the foldable smartphone market. It already seems certain that the device can at least keep up with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Larger than Samsung’s counterpart

Since only Samsung and Oppo currently have a foldable on the market, a direct comparison is of course possible. The display of the presented Magic V comes in a 21:9 format and measures a total of 6.45 inches. In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 “only” has a display size of 6.2 inches. Both rely on AMOLED display technology. Oppo comes in last place with its 5.5-inch display.

Besides AMOLED technology, Honor also wants to score with other features on its display. Firstly, there is the refresh rate of 120 Hz and secondly, a sharp resolution of 2,560 x 1,080 pixels. As befits a foldable, the Honor Magic V should also be comfortable to hold despite the large display. When folded, it is about 2 mm thinner than Samsung’s counterpart with a thickness of just under 14 mm. This should not only feel handier, but also look better because it is less clunky.

A durable foldable at last

In unveiling it, Honor has clearly addressed an Achilles’ heel of foldables that is often criticized by the public – durability. However, instead of presenting a long list of different glass types, the Chinese company simply lets actions speak for themselves.

During the presentation, they simply dropped the foldable smartphone. After the fall from shoulder height, the device did not show any damage. This is not least due to the high-quality materials that Honor uses here. For example, the case is made of a resistant titanium alloy.

Saturated performance

Since the Magic V will undoubtedly be Honor’s new premium smartphone, the company naturally does not compromise on the technical features. This already starts with the installed processor. The Snapdragon 9 Gen 1, the very latest chip from Qualcomm, is used. This clearly sets Honor apart from Samsung and Oppo with its Magic V. The camera technology also sounds promising. A camera module with a total of three lenses is supposed to be used on the back. According to Honor, each lens of the triple camera offers a resolution of 50 megapixels.

On the front, the manufacturer again installs two selfie cameras. These are supposed to offer a resolution of 42 megapixels. Of course, the battery’s staying power also plays a big role. The Magic V is supposed to offer a 4,750 mAh battery. You should be able to charge it with a power of 66 watts. Two built-in speakers are supposed to provide a good stereo sound. Honor even speaks of “surround sound” here.

Price and availability

Those who want to opt for the foldable smartphone from Honor have the choice between three different colors. While black and silver are rather classic, the Chinese manufacturer opts for a pleasing variety with orange. We can only estimate the prices in this country so far. In China, the new flagship from Honor is expected to cost the equivalent of 1,380 Euros.

The price includes 12 GB of RAM and an integrated flash storage with 256 GB. If that is not enough, you can also get the Honor Magic V with a flash storage twice as big. However, Honor charges an MSRP of approximately 1,500 Euros in China. The foldable premium smartphone is supposed to hit the shelves in China on January 18. Unfortunately, it is not yet known when it will be released in our country.
