With the new Huawei FreeBuds SE, the manufacturer has introduced an inexpensive, completely wireless in-ear headphone that is positioned alongside the top model FreeBuds Pro 2, which recently impressed in our review. For a price of just 49.99 euros, however, the SE model also has a lot to offer.
The Huawei FreeBuds SE in detail
With the Huawei FreeBuds SE true-wireless headphones, the manufacturer primarily wants to appeal to those who want to spend significantly less money on in-ears, but still do not want to do without a strong sound.
However, you will have to do without the active noise cancellation and the high-resolution audio codecs of the current top model FreeBuds Pro 2. Instead, the FreeBuds SE, which weigh just 5.1 grams per earbud, score points with 10 mm drivers that cover a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and up-to-date Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.
The manufacturer is particularly proud of the lightweight design, which should also score points for excellent wearing comfort in the long run. “The half-in-ear design of the HUAWEI FreeBuds SE was developed to fit the contours of the outer ear and reduce pressure on the ear canal, resulting in an air-permeable, lightweight fit,” Huawei reveals.
Visually, the headphones are largely reminiscent of the current Pro model and come in blue and white, although the blue model looks rather green in the pictures. Thanks to three different ear pad sizes, the wearing comfort can be adjusted to the own ear shape, anyway.
Battery life and operation
The manufacturer puts the battery life of the Huawei FreeBuds SE at six hours for music playback and 4 hours for phone calls. In combination with the charging case, the runtime increases by 24 hours, charging is via USB Type-C.
The in-ear headphones, which also offer protection against sweat and splash water according to IPX4, are operated via the touch-sensitive touch surfaces. They allow you to play or pause music, switch to the previous or next song, activate the voice assistant, and accept or reject calls.
Huawei AI Life comes into play as the companion app. Offered is even automatic wear detection, pausing playback when you take one or both Earbuds out of your ear.
Prices and availability
The Huawei FreeBuds SE are available in stores now for an MSRP of 49.99 euros. If they can keep up with the FreeBuds Pro 2 in terms of sound, at least to a large extent, that would be excellent value for money. You can find more details on the manufacturer’s product website.
