Huawei Mate 50 Pro: Flagship smartphone offers camera with variable aperture

Huawei has officially unveiled its new flagship camera smartphone. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro still does not come with Google services, but it offers an exciting camera setup. The Ultra Aperture XMAGE camera comes up with a ten-fold adjustable physical aperture as well as 200x zoom.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro in detail

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro once again relies on particularly high-quality features with which it wants to reclaim the throne among smartphone cameras. Most recently, the Google Pixel 7 Pro (our review) had pushed itself to the top at DxOMark.

The new Mate 50 Pro relies on an Ultra Aperture XMAGE camera with a smart, variable and physical aperture that can be adjusted in ten sizes. It independently adjusts its size to the subject and shooting situation in automatic mode. In professional mode, the depth of field and the degree of blur can be adjusted manually.

Maximum open aperture images are possible at f/1.4, which is supposed to provide a particularly shallow depth of field and appealing bokeh. The XD Fusion Engine function enhances each image by mimicking the visual information processing of the human brain.

At the pixel level, this is said to process details, color, dynamic range, bokeh and other factors. In night mode, the smartphone is supposed to come up with a particularly high dynamic range and score with strongly pronounced bright and dark areas.

There’s also a periscope telephoto camera with 200x zoom and a wide-angle macro camera that can also handle macro video recording and macro picture-in-picture (PiP) to accurately reproduce moving close-ups.

In total, the rear-facing camera are composed of the following lenses:.

  • 50 MP Ultra Aperture Camera (F1.4 – F4.0 aperture, OIS)
  • 13 MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera (F2.2 aperture)
  • 64 MP telephoto camera (F3.5 aperture, OIS)

The front camera resolves with 13 megapixels, offers an aperture of f/2.4 and also has an additional 3D camera with depth detection.

Large display with 120 Hz, but only 4G

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro also relies on a 6.74-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and 300 Hz touch sampling rate, as well as an FHD resolution of 2,616 x 1,212 pixels.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 does its job inside, but it only supports 4G/LTE and has 8 GB of working memory. 256 GB of internal storage are offered, which can be expanded by another 256 GB via NM card.

The case in the chic design with the iconic symmetry and the space ring is also protected against water and dust according to IP68. The new EMUI 13 is used as the operating system. The battery has a capacity of 4,700 mAh and is quickly charged via SuperCharge with a maximum of 66 watts.

“After extensive use, up to three hours of standby or twelve minutes of calls are still possible even with a battery level of only 1 percent thanks to innovative energy-saving mode with SuperEnergy Boosting,” promises the manufacturer.

Price and availability of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is available now in stores and in the manufacturer’s online store in Black and Silver. The manufacturer’s MSRP is 1,199 euros.

Between October 27 and November 30, the FreeBuds 2 (MSRP: 199 euros) will also be included for free when purchased from the Huawei online store. We have already tested the chic in-ear headphones and were thrilled.
