Huawei MatePad Paper: Exciting e-ink tablet wants to offer paper-like experience

The Huawei MatePad Paper is now available. The Chinese manufacturer had presented the e-ink tablet to the public during the Mobile World Congress 2022, and now you can finally buy the exciting device.

Huawei MatePad Paper Details: writing (almost) like on paper

The Huawei MatePad Paper marks the manufacturer’s first e-ink tablet. It follows in the footsteps of competitors like the Boox Nova3 Color or Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and also wants to take on the popular ReMarkable 2 thanks to a larger feature set.

The MatePad Paper was developed specifically for mobile use and is characterized by its slim shape and low weight of around 360 grams. It comes with a 10.3-inch Huawei FullView display and is the world’s first e-ink display module to receive TÜV Rheinland “Paper Like Display Certification.”

In combination with the pen, this is said to achieve a writing sensation and a “pleasant rustling” that comes close to writing on paper and is especially suitable for those who prefer to write classically on paper.

The bare technical details

We have already covered the display size of 10.3 inches (26.16 cm). The MatePad Paper has a resolution of 1,872 x 1,404 pixels (227 ppi) in a 4:3 format and only displays in black and white. It supports 10-point multi-touch and offers a brightness setting in 32 levels.

The Kirin 820E is used as the processor, which is supported by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of system storage. The CPU consists of three Cortex A76 cores with a clock rate of 2.22 GHz and three Cortex A55 cores with a clock rate of 1.84 GHz. Two speakers and four microphones are also installed. The e-ink tablet also has a fingerprint sensor. However, there are no cameras.

Huawei’s MatePad Paper uses a USB Type-C port for charging and connecting headphones. The tablet communicates wirelessly via WLAN IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, as well as via Bluetooth 5.2.

The battery has a capacity of 3,625 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, should be enough for 27 hours of uninterrupted reading time, almost 8 hours of writing notes or 9 hours of playing audio books. The battery is then fully charged again in just under one and a half hours thanks to 25-watt Fast Charge.

What makes the MatePad Paper so special?

The e-ink display of the Huawei MatePad Paper is capable of displaying audio books, audio content and even GIFs. A Smart Refresh mode is also offered, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate to the opened content. Another advantage of the display is the readability under direct sunlight. Here, for example, E-Ink is clearly ahead of AMOLED panels.

The innovative design of the back provides a book-like appearance and a pleasant feel. In this regard, the MatePad Paper has adopted the minimalist aesthetics of the previous MatePad series and features an integrated unibody design with a cover made of vegan leather. The delicate texture, which is comparable to leather, adds a classy touch to the device and guarantees a smooth, silky feel.

Huawei’s HarmonyOS is used as the operating system, which enables a seamless connection between Huawei devices and forms a Super Device. For example, content from the PC and smartphone can be seamlessly transferred to the e-ink tablet. In addition, the tablet can be used as an additional PC drive by directly dragging and dropping files between the two devices.

The tablet also allows you to receive and write emails, check your calendar, and offers a multi-window feature that allows you to take notes while reading at the same time. Thanks to handwriting recognition, the tablet converts its own writing into text directly on the device. Thanks to the open OS, popular apps like Wolino, Kindle or Wattpad are also available.

The new 2nd generation Huawei M-Pencil

The MatePad Paper features Huawei’s 2nd generation M-Pencil, which supports 4096-step pressure for a smooth writing experience and low latency of 26ms. This makes it feel like writing on paper. As soon as the pen tip hits the tablet’s screen, you should be able to hear a pleasant “swish” while writing, according to the manufacturer.

To create this writing experience, the Huawei MatePad Paper not only adopts the convenient operation and general features of the MatePad series, such as double-tap to switch tools, automatic Bluetooth pairing and magnetic charging, but also offers a number of new features such as Annotate and split-screen Note.

Price and availability

The Huawei MatePad Paper is now available in black in stores, as well as in the Huawei Online Store. MSRP is €499, with the second-generation M Pencil equivalent of €100 and Paper Folio Cover included right out of the box.

Students can get an additional 5 percent discount on the purchase price, as well as on various other products, via Unidays. Those who want to finance the tablet can also do so without interest: For the next 12 months, the Huawei Online Store offers an attractive 0% financing.
