Huawei Watch Buds: Smartwatch meets True Wireless In-Ears

Despite extensive US sanctions, Huawei is not giving up on the Western market. With the Huawei Watch Buds, the Chinese tech company now launches a new smartwatch with a novel headphone design. More precisely, the manufacturer is trying to combine the two most important companions of smartphone owners with a smartwatch and wireless in-ears.

Huawei Watch Buds is a small revolution

With its Huawei Watch Buds, the tech giant from the Far East has managed to pull off a real surprise. After all, the company is the first in the world to unceremoniously hide wireless headphones under the hood of a wearable. In order to access the in-ears, one should simply have to flip open the smartwatch’s display.

Here, the manufacturer relies on a mechanism reminiscent of a pocket watch. The idea of the revolutionary smartwatch is as simple as it is ingenious. In 2023, many people will not only wear a smartwatch on their wrist, but will also carry a transport case including wireless in-ears. So why not combine the two?

Classic design meets a wide range of functions

Visually, the Huawei Watch Buds cannot be distinguished from a conventional smartwatch at first glance. However, you can probably expect the watch to turn out a bit thicker than models from the competition. After all, the two headphones also need space inside. According to the manufacturer, it should be just under 15 mm thick. Otherwise, Huawei relies on a classic watch design in terms of looks. The display is circular and the watch is attached to the wrist with a simple leather strap. The range of functions does not deviate from other smartwatches either.

For example, you can track your activities here and, on top of that, have vital signs such as blood oxygen, pulse and sleep level monitored. Huawei provides its latest wearable with a wide range of sensors for this purpose. Athletes will be happy about 80 exercise modes, which are supposed to include professional sports modes like cycling or running. The results can then be read on the 1.43-inch AMOLED screen. The Chinese tech company is also not lukewarm when it comes to battery life. Huawei says that the battery can last up to three days in average use. It should even be seven in power-saving mode.

Huawei Watch Buds relies on pocket watch mechanics

Owners of a Huawei Watch Buds will certainly take great pleasure in the first few weeks to showcase the smartwatch’s unique feature. In order to access the headphones located inside, the manufacturer relies on a mechanism that is somewhat reminiscent of a classic pocket watch. With a simple push of a button, the screen flips open via a 5 mm hinge. Inside are the two headphones, which are supposed to be prevented from falling out with the help of magnets. This principle is reminiscent of classic True Wireless in-ear cases. The headphones are not only housed in the case.

On top of that, they charge their batteries here. You can see what the current charge level is on the smartwatch’s display. Due to their lighter weight of just 4 g, you should hardly feel the cylindrical in-ears in your ears. Here, Huawei relies on a much more compact design than the competition. However, the sound is supposed to be really great despite the small casing. So-called planar speakers are supposed to provide good sound with their four magnets and Triple Adaptive EQ. The compact headphones are even supposed to offer active noise cancellation (ANC). For this, two microphones are used in each case, which can also be used for phone calls.

Headphones in twin design

Those who own True Wireless in-ears know that they usually have a fixed arrangement in the charging case. With the small headphones of the Huawei Watch Buds, this is apparently different. There is no distinction between left and right here. Instead, you can place them in the ear as you like. The big advantage is that they can also be quickly placed in the watch’s case. You don’t have to worry about which headphones go where. On top of that, they offer ear recognition. This means, for example, that they pause playback as soon as you take a pair of headphones out of your ear.

With the help of adaptive identification technology, but on top of that, when you insert the headphones, your hearing channel is measured and the sound is adjusted accordingly. Thus, everyone should get his own individual sound. Huawei relies on a classic touch control. The Chinese manufacturer equips its headphones with a touch-sensitive surface. Depending on the location and number of taps, various commands can thus be passed on to the in-ears.

Price and availability

The Huawei Watch Buds (official website) should also be able to offer a variety of apps with support from the in-house AppGallery. According to Huawei, the smartwatch cannot only be used with devices of the same brand. Besides HarmonyOS, the Chinese manufacturer also promises support for AndroidOS and iOS. The revolutionary combination of smartwatch and True Wireless in-ears is supposed to be available for purchase at a RRP of 499.00 Euros starting March 1, 2023. Pre-orders are possible between February 15 and 28 and secure a 30 euro discount.
