IKEA Goes All-In on Matter: 21 New Smart Home Products for Enhanced Interoperability

The Swedish furniture giant IKEA is announcing a comprehensive refresh of its smart home range, launching 21 new products. The clear objective is to make the technology more accessible, affordable, and easier to use through the universal Matter standard. By doing so, IKEA once again positions itself as a key player aiming to make home connectivity appealing to the masses.

The new products span the areas of lighting, sensors, and control and include both successors to existing devices and entirely new developments. All these novelties will be Matter-compatible from the outset. This is a crucial step, as Matter, an industry-wide standard, is set to massively simplify compatibility between devices from different brands, thus revolutionizing the user experience in the smart home.

  • Matter Integration: All 21 new products are Matter-compatible from the ground up, facilitating seamless networking with other smart home systems (e.g., Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa).
  • Expanded Sensor Portfolio: Five new sensors, including motion, door/window, temperature/humidity, air quality, and water leakage sensors, serve as the basis for versatile automations.
  • Focus on Thread: Many of the new sensors are certified as Matter-over-Thread devices, indicating the growing importance of the fast and energy-efficient Thread protocol.
  • Affordable Control: New remote controls (Bilresa) and smart plugs with energy tracking (Grillplats) extend the control options for manual and automated scenarios.

Connected Home Made Easy: The Matter Revolution

IKEA’s new smart home products offer a comprehensive set of tools to make everyday life more convenient, secure, and energy-efficient. At the core of the connectivity remains the DIRIGERA Hub, which acts as a Matter Bridge. This not only enables the connection of the new devices but also makes a large part of the existing IKEA smart home products (like TRÅDFRI light sources) Matter-capable. This is particularly good news for long-time users of IKEA smart home products, as a complete replacement of existing devices is not necessary to benefit from the new standard’s advantages.

Crucially, the new devices are no longer solely based on the older Zigbee standard. The new sensors, such as the TIMMERFLOTTE Temperature and Humidity Sensor or the MYGGSPRAY Motion Sensor, are certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) as Thread products. Thread is an IP-based wireless standard specifically developed for battery-powered smart home devices. Combined with Matter, this allows for more robust, responsive, and energy-efficient communication. IKEA had already enabled the Thread Border Router on the DIRIGERA Hub in summer 2025, which underscores the growing strategic significance of this protocol.

In detail, IKEA is expanding its range with new categories that go beyond mere lighting control. The five new sensors are:

  • MYGGSPRAY: A motion sensor for indoor and outdoor use.
  • MYGGBETT: A door and window sensor.
  • TIMMERFLOTTE: A temperature and humidity sensor that can display readings on a dot-matrix display.
  • ALPSTUGA: A comprehensive air quality sensor that measures CO₂, particulate matter (PM2.5), temperature, and humidity, and features a clock display.
  • KLIPPBOK: A water leakage sensor that alarms in case of damage and can send notifications.

This expansion of the sensor technology enables a variety of new automations—from automatically turning on lights when entering a room to monitoring indoor air quality and preventing water damage.

Bulbs and Control: The New Highlights

In addition to sensor technology, IKEA is also renewing its lighting and control product lines. The new KAJPLATS series is being launched for light sources. This includes eleven different variants, ranging from classic E27 and E26 shapes to compact E14 models and GU10 spotlights. The luminosity has been increased up to 1,521 lumens, and models are available with white spectrum (Tunable White) or full color change (RGB)—a significant functional enhancement compared to the older TRÅDFRI range. For lovers of the retro look, clear-glass filament bulbs are also available, offering dimmable white light.

The control options are also being expanded: the new BILRESA remotes come in two variants—with a classic dual-button design or with a scroll wheel for intuitive brightness adjustment. Both offer flexible control options independent of the smartphone app. Additionally, the new GRILLPLATS smart plug not only makes conventional devices smart but can also track energy consumption. An outdoor smart plug (TOFSMYGGA) rounds out the offering (planned from Spring 2026). The emphasis here is on clear user value and intuitive operation, consistent with the IKEA philosophy of introducing technology not for technology’s sake, but to improve life.

Availability and Outlook

With this comprehensive product launch, IKEA is taking a major step toward a unified and affordable smart home. The new products, which will be gradually introduced in the coming months, are expected to be available starting January 2026, according to previous information. Exact prices and availability vary by market and will be communicated locally by IKEA. IKEA is keeping its promise to offer affordable and user-friendly technology, and the full Matter support significantly lowers the barrier to entry into the smart home world. The promise of easy installation and cross-manufacturer compatibility is likely to appeal to tech enthusiasts looking for a flexible system.
