Illegal streaming: demand for illegal copies of movies on the rise, according to Akamai

In its “State of the Internet” report, content delivery network operator Akamai Technologies has confirmed a sharp increase in the illegal downloading of movies. Illegal file sharing has increased sharply again due to the multitude of streaming services and increased prices, it said.

Sharp increase in digital streams and downloads

According to Akamai‘s report, between January 2021 and September 2021, the demand for illegal movie services worldwide increased to 3.7 billion streams and downloads. These break down into illegal torrents and websites that allow streaming of movies and TV series directly in the browser or via an app.

He said 61.5 percent of all hits to a website with illegal content occurred directly on the site, with 28.6 percent of all visitors specifically searching for a specific movie or series. For the measurement, Akami partnered with Muso, a British company that deals with illegal file sharing, he said.

According to James Mason, chief technology officer of Muso, there was a 16 percent growth in this regard compared to the previous nine-month period. In total, a full 132 billion views of illegal copy websites were recorded between January and September 2021.

Germany no longer in the top 5

The U.S. leads the way with 13.5 billion hits, followed by Russia with 7.2 billion, India (6.5 billion), China (5.9 billion) and Brazil (4.5 billion). Germany previously held the top position, but is now on the decline.

For lawyer Christian Solmecke, however, this is no reason for reassurance, as he revealed on YouTube. He expects the next big wave in file sharing, which has flattened out considerably over the past ten years, but is now seeing a rapid rise again.

He speaks of a “veritable renaissance of peer-to-peer networking”, which he attributes to the increased number of streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and co, as well as the ever-increasing prices.
