iOS 16 Release: Apple has started rolling out its new iPhone operating system iOS 16. Those who own an iPhone X or a newer model can now launch the software update via the Settings menu and benefit from some exciting new features.
iOS 16 Release: Download now available
iOS 16 awaits all owners of the Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 and newer with some improvements. About 2.66 GB is the download of the update, which can be triggered via the system settings under the item “General” -> “Software update”.
The most important visual innovation is the new lock screen, which can also be extended with widgets in the new version. Similar to the complications of the Apple Watch, you can now equip it with various details that, for example, display the battery status, activity rings and much more.
It’s also possible to customize the watch’s design on the lock screen, while wallpapers made with the iPhone’s Portrait mode can now be displayed in a 3D effect, sometimes towering over the watch.
Multiple lock screens can also be created, which you can switch between. Also new is a music player that spans the entire screen, allowing for better operation.
Also new on the iOS 16 lock screen is the display of notifications. From now on, these will be displayed in the lower third of the screen so as not to cover the background image and widgets.
iOS 16 brings passkeys and more
Passkeys represent another exciting iOS 16 innovation, with which the FIDO Alliance is aiming for a future without passwords. Supported websites and apps thus allow the creation of accounts, as well as login, without having to assign a password.
Authentication is done via push notification on the smartphone, and it’s fully encrypted. This makes it stronger than any common type of two-factor authentication. Passkeys also work on non-Apple devices.
Controllers for the Nintendo switch and other consoles are finally recognized in iOS 16 and can be paired with the smartphone, as we already reported in June.
iOS 16 also introduces many other new features and improvements for iPhone models, which you can check out again in full directly at Apple. These include Live Text for videos, new smart photo features, a smart dictation feature, and more.
