iPhone Air 2: Apple wants to eliminate the weaknesses of its predecessor

The iPhone Air – Apple’s new middle ground between the standard and Pro series – attracted a lot of attention. But one point of criticism remained constant: the camera equipment, in particular the lack of a telephoto lens. Now new leaks report that Apple intends to rectify precisely this weakness in the upcoming iPhone Air 2. If the information is confirmed, the next model could close a gap that has so far prevented many users from reaching for the Air.

Highlights

  • iPhone Air 2 rumored to receive a telephoto lens
  • Focus on better camera features without Pro price
  • Positioning between standard and Pro iPhones becomes clearer

Improved camera features

According to recent reports from the supply chain, Apple is working on equipping the iPhone Air 2 with a telephoto lens – a feature that was previously reserved exclusively for the Pro models. The first iPhone Air (€ 999.00 *) lacked this option completely. Users had to make do with a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle setup, which in practice led to clear disadvantages, especially in portrait shots and zoom situations. Apple could significantly improve the camera quality with a telephoto lens.

This should be particularly interesting for users who value high-quality photos and videos but don’t want to pay the high premium of the Pro devices. An optical zoom also opens up new possibilities in everyday life: Concerts, sporting events or travel situations can be better captured without images quickly appearing blurred or grainy. This change would differentiate the Air more clearly from the standard series. While Apple has so far defined the differences primarily through the display and design, the Air series would now have a real performance feature that could be a deciding factor for many users.

Positioning between Standard and Pro becomes clearer

With the telephoto lens, Apple is apparently pursuing a new strategy: the iPhone Air should not just be a slimmed-down Pro version, but an independent model with a good balance of technology. This means: high-quality features without drifting into the premium range. Initial leaks suggest that Apple is also working on optimizing energy management in the iPhone Air 2. The battery life of the first Air model was solid in tests, but not outstanding.

With more efficient components and a revised A-chip, Apple could improve on another weakness of its predecessor. The role in the product portfolio is also interesting: If the iPhone Air 2 does indeed get a telephoto camera, it would be an attractive alternative to the Pro models for many buyers – especially for those who are looking for a light, slim device but don’t want to do without important camera functions.
