Jabra Elite 4 Active available now

The hifi experts from Jabra want to expand their own portfolio of True Wireless In Ears with another model. However, the manufacturer does not want to enrich the market segment of flagship earbuds with the Jabra Elite 4 Active. Instead, the small Bluetooth headphones are making their way into the mid-range.

Favorable ANC

With a price that falls between that for the Elite 3 and Elite 7, Jabra delivers a true mid-range model. This is not really apparent from the features. After all, the Elite 4 Active is supposed to convince with active noise cancellation (ANC) in addition to its small size. However, if you take a closer look at the manufacturer’s specifications, it becomes clear that the ANC is supposed to differ significantly from that of the premium models of the Elite 7 series. For example, there are supposed to be no customization options.

Bulky bass

At the heart of the sound reproduction are the drivers with a size of 6 mm. Jabra itself promises in particular a massive bass. Since this is all always a matter of taste, there is of course the option to adjust the sound in the custom equalizer. Not only should the sound be good for the wearer himself, but also for any interlocutors on the other end. Finally, the Elite 4 Active also offers the option of being used as a hands-free device, according to Jabra. This is where the total of four integrated microphones come into play.

(Fortunately) no touch control

Those who, like me, do not like touch control, will be pleased that Jabra remains true to itself in its Elite 4 Active. Thus, the manufacturer does without corresponding sensors and relies on reliable conventional buttons instead. You should be able to make the most important inputs by pressing the buttons. Besides the playback settings, you should also be able to control calls here.

The small earbuds are supposed to be able to offer more input options than the competition. Jabra promises, for example, that you can mute the microphones while talking on the phone. This is by no means a matter of course. The same goes for being able to increase or decrease the volume.

Compact dimensions require waivers

A flagship of the upcoming Jabra Elite 4 Active is undoubtedly the small design. This is a decisive advantage, especially for running athletes. However, the small format naturally also results in some sacrifice. For example, Jabra had to install a smaller battery here than in the Elite 7 Active premium headphones. The fact that the Elite 4 Active are small can already be seen at the first glance at the wearer’s ears. After all, they only protrude minimally from the ear according to the manufacturer. However, one obviously does not only have to make concessions in the area of battery capacity. Users also have to be willing to compromise in terms of comfort. However, the limited features are probably more due to the significantly lower price that Jabra charges here compared to its Elite 7 Active.

In particular, some will sorely miss an automatic detection of the ear with the Elite 4 Active. Those who place a high value on customization will also find fault with the rather rudimentary setting options. Otherwise, the technical features of the compact earbuds read very well. In addition to active noise cancellation, the Elite 4 Active also offer a practical transparency mode. This is particularly useful if you are at a train station or airport and need to hear loudspeaker announcements.

Bluetooth 5.2 and modern audio codecs

In terms of codecs and wireless connectivity, Jabra is up to date with its small sports in-ears. Thus, Bluetooth 5.2 is used here. In addition, audio files can be played back losslessly in high quality thanks to the AAC, SBC and aptX codecs. However, two devices cannot be paired at the same time. If you do not want to miss this feature, you will have to go for more expensive Jabra Elites models. Outdoor sports enthusiasts will be happy about the IP57 certification. This ensures that you do not have to worry about sweat, nor rain showers.

Matching app for iOS and Android

If you leave ANC on permanently, Jabra promises a whopping seven hours of battery life. As befits True Wireless In Ears, there’s also a handy carrying case that doubles as a charging case at the same time. It is charged via USB-C and is supposed to have enough capacity for a total of three full battery charges.

No matter whether iPhone or Android device. Thanks to suitable Jabra app, you can conveniently control the headphones via smartphone or tablet. Control with the two most popular voice assistants Alexa and Google Assistant is also possible, according to Jabra. Those who call an iPhone or iPad their own can also use Apple’s in-house assistant Siri.

Price and Availability

Today, Dec. 29, 2021, Jabra launches its new Elite 4 Active. The MSRP for the compact in-ears is 120 euros. There are a total of three different colors to choose from. Besides classic black, Jabra also offers navy blue and light mint.
