Lenovo has unveiled a new gaming tower that features an unusual combination: a laptop processor soldered directly onto a special motherboard, paired with a full-fledged desktop graphics card. The result is a relatively compact and energy-efficient PC, though it isn’t exactly cheap due to the current DRAM crisis.
Laptop CPU Meets Desktop GPU
Buyers of the Lenovo GeekPro can choose between an Intel Core 7 245HX and an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. The top-of-the-line model offers eight performance cores with boost clock speeds of up to 5.5 GHz, as well as 16 additional efficiency cores. The catch with the laptop CPU: Since it’s soldered in place, a future upgrade would require replacing not only the processor but also the entire motherboard.
When it comes to the graphics card, however, Lenovo sticks with the classic desktop format. You can choose between a particularly compact Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 with just one fan or an RTX 5060 Ti with two fans. Depending on the graphics card selected, a 400-watt or 500-watt power supply with 80 Plus Platinum certification is used. Compact Design, Limited Ports
With a volume of 17 liters, the GeekPro Tower is pleasantly compact. On the front, Lenovo has included a USB-C port with 20 Gbit/s, two USB-A ports with 10 Gbit/s, and a 3.5-mm audio jack. The rear panel, on the other hand, offers only Gigabit Ethernet, four additional USB-A ports, and the graphics card’s HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Anyone who relies on USB4 or Thunderbolt will need to look for a different model.
Pricing and Availability
The Lenovo GeekPro Tower will initially launch exclusively in China. There, the entry-level model with an Intel Core 7 245HX, GeForce RTX 5060, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD costs the equivalent of about 1,290 euros (9,999 yuan). The top-of-the-line model with an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti costs about 1,670 euros (12,999 yuan). Lenovo has not yet commented on a possible international launch, such as in Europe.
