Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 comes with a 16:10 display

Lenovo’s flagship comes with a general overhaul in the 9th generation. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 has a 16:10 display, a larger battery and a bigger touchpad as well.

More options for display and webcam

At the same time, the Carbon G9 can be completely customized to one’s own wishes and needs through various options. There are four different options to choose from for the display. All of them have the 14-inch display in 16:10 format in common. The WUXGA without touch with 400 cd/m² is available as a basis, it displays 100 percent of the sRGB color space, is matte and reduces the blue content to keep the strain on the eyes low. Furthermore, the same panel is still offered with touch. The third screen option of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 comes with ePrivacy feature, so the panel can only be viewed from the front and offers a maximum of 500 cd/m². The last option is a UHD display with 3,840 x 2,400 pixels, 100 percent DCI-P3, anti-reflective and anti-static coating (ARAS), a color calibration and HDR400.

There are not only different options for the display, but also for the webcam integrated into the frame. As a basis, there is a 720p HD camera with privacy shutter, whereby the lens is closed by a mechanical shutter. In addition, there is the option of an infrared variant for a biometric login via Windows Cello and Privacy Shutter. Last but not least, the third option offers Human Presence Detection, which locks the notebook when the user is no longer on the device.

Larger battery due to new case

With the new screen format, the Carbon G9 comes in at 314.5 × 221.6 × 14.9 mm (W×D×H), giving it more room for the battery. The new battery has 57 Wh and is supposed to achieve a runtime of 16 hours. As for the weight, it comes to 1.13 kg.

Since Lenovo was already rebuilding, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 gets Intel’s Tiger Lake-U from the new vPro lineup, paired with up to 32 GB LPDDR4X-4266 as well as a 2 TB PCIe SSD. The new processor also brings new connectivity to the Carbon G9. It comes with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB 3.2 Type A, one HDMI 2.0 and a microphone/headphone jack. The WWAN version also has a nano-SIM slot. Connectivity is provided by the AX201 module with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, and there is also the option for modules with 5G and LTE.

The waste heat is no longer discharged from the side via the air intake, but now completely to the back. The keyboard of the ThinkPad X1 is illuminated and the TrackPad with red TrackPoint has grown to a width of 11 cm. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos certification are located to the left and right of the keyboard. Furthermore, four 360-degree microphones and Dolby Voice are available for a good sound.

Availability and price

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G9 is scheduled to go on sale in April 2021 at a price starting at 1,549 euros. There is a choice between matte black and a carbon variant.
