Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5: Gaming notebook with GeForce RTX 3080 Ti & Core i9

With the high-end Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5 ultrabook, the manufacturer presented a brute gaming notebook during the Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona. In the case of the G5, Lenovo combines an Intel Alder Lake processor with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU and a 165 Hz fast display.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5: high-end gaming ultrabook

The latest model of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme was officially unveiled at MWC 2022. It is called Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5 and has a lot of power under the hood. It is installed in a case that is only 17.9 millimeters thin and weighs 1.88 kilograms.

The gaming performance should be beyond any doubt. An Intel Core i9 processor of the 12th generation (Alder Lake) and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU with 16 GB GDDR6 graphics memory and a TGP of up to 110 watts ensure that in the top model.

Effective cooling is provided by a liquid metal thermal paste and a vapor chamber cooling system that is supposed to keep the temperatures of the high-end components in check. The features are rounded off by up to 64 GB of DDR5 working memory with a clock rate of 4800 MHz, as well as up to 8 TB of SSD memory, which is distributed over two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. The Extreme G5 draws energy from a 90 Wh battery.

165 Hz display or touchscreen

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5 relies on a 16-inch screen diagonal, which is offered in different configuration variants. On the one hand, there is a 165 Hz fast, anti-reflective IPS panel with a 1200p resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels) and a peak brightness of 500 nits. Alternatively, Lenovo also offers a 1600p display including touchscreen, which turns out a bit brighter with 600 nits.

In terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are offered. The notebook also has an integrated 5G modem and an NFC chip. In terms of ports, there are two Thunderbolt 4, two mail USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, one HDMI 2.1, and an SD Express 7.0 card reader.

The 1080p webcam features a privacy shutter and an infrared camera for Windows login via facial recognition. In terms of security features, Intel vPro, Intel Hardware Shield, a Nano Kensington Lock slot, a fingerprint sensor in the power button and an integrated Tile Tracker are offered. The latter allows locating the notebook over a period of up to 14 days, even when turned off.
