LG introduces first stretchable high-resolution OLED display

A high-resolution display that you can easily stretch to expand from a 12-inch screen diagonal to 14 inches. What sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie has now been unveiled by LG Display in the form of a new concept display.

The OLED display is supposed to be foldable by 20 percent and offer a resolution or pixel density of 100 ppi, and RGB colors are also supposed to be fully displayed. In terms of flexibility, the new display is supposed to increase noticeably, the resolution increases, because LG installs 40 micrometer small Mico-LEDs with high luminosity and robustness here.

Thanks to new electronics and a durable film-like substrate, the display is even more flexible and stretchable than previous models. The manufacturer sees many different scenarios as application areas.

For example, the display should be easy to install in clothing or furniture, cars, airplanes and much more. LG also sees potential for using its stretchable OLED display in the mobility and gaming sectors.

It is the result of a large-scale research project launched back in 2020 by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade and Energy (MOTIE). According to Soo-young Yoon, executive vice president and CTO at LG Display, they plan to continue working on it and improving the technology from now on.
