LG OLED Evo ART90: Chic designer smart TV launches in Germany
About half a year after the announcement of the new LG OLED Evo ART90 smart TV, the market launch in Germany is getting closer. Meanwhile, the product website has been published, revealing all specifications.
LG OLED Evo ART90: With motorized fabric cover
The LG OLED Evo ART90 (model: 65ART90E9QA) is a rather unusual but equally pretty smart TV. The company’s Korean press office first announced the device in December 2021, and meanwhile the German product website provides all the details.
The most striking feature of the 65-inch smart TV is the fabric cover, which LG says blurs the lines between TV and artwork. The Objet design shows itself inspired by an easel. At the same time, the OLED TV is so slim that you can lean it against the wall like a canvas.
The motorized fabric cover can be lowered when the TV is in use to display the entire picture. Up, the TV displays what’s called a “line view,” which shows everyday information such as the date, time and weather in a variety of themes and designs.
When playing music, the upper part of the display is supposed to show a discreet screensaver including an equalizer function. The fabric is a high-quality and durable material, the result of collaboration with the premium textile brand Kvadrat from Denmark.
The Danes contributed their stuff to various tech collaborations in the past. For example, in the Harman Kardon Citation MultiBeam 1100 soundbar or the KEF LSX II compact speakers.
The Technology of the LG OLED Evo ART90
However, the LG OLED Evo ART90 not only looks chic, but also has a lot to offer in terms of technology. It is exclusively offered with a screen diagonal of 65 inches (164 cm) and relies on an OLED panel including 4K resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.
A native refresh rate of 100 Hz and 120 Hz is offered. Cinema HDR with Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 Pro and HLG are used as HDR standards. In addition, the built-in α9 Gen5 AI processor intervenes in the picture display thanks to AI functions and thus improves the brightness, for example, offers HDR tone mapping and automatically upscales content with lower resolutions.
Overall, the Evo ART90 measures 146.2 x 156.8 x 5.48 cm (width x height x depth) and weighs a hefty 52 kg. Unfortunately, VESA wall mounting is not possible.
The smart TV is equipped with four HDMI 2.1 ports, which enable 4K including 120 FPS and VRR in combination with current consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X. In addition, there are three USB ports, an Ethernet LAN port, an optical digital output, as well as eARC and LG SIMPLINK support. The LG TV communicates wirelessly via WLAN (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0.
The TV also wants to convince in terms of sound and relies on a 4.2 sound system with 80W total power (40W woofer and 10W per channel). Including Dolby Atmos, AI sound enhancements and Wireless Speaker Audio (WiSA) support for wireless Hi-Res sound. It’s also controllable with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and integrates with Apple HomeKit, as well as Google Home.
Downgrade for gamers
That the LG OLED Evo ART90 is not aimed at gamers, however, is evident in the gaming features. This is because the stylish smart TV does not offer Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium.
Unlike the models of the G2 series (LG 4K OLED evo TV G2) or the C2, which was recently presented in a limited Star Wars edition. This is, especially in view of the price, an absolute disappointment. After all, the 2022 models of the G2 and C2 series cost less than half the price that the manufacturer is charging for the ART90.
Price and availability
The LG OLED Evo ART90 comes in at a hefty MSRP of $8,999. By comparison, the LG 4K OLED evo TV G2, also with 65 inches, is priced at 3,599 euros. The C2, on the other hand, at 3,199 euros. It is not yet clear when the designer smart TV will reach retailers. The market launch is planned for the third quarter of 2022.
