With the new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple presents the next evolutionary stage of its professional notebook. The 14- and 16-inch models combine a revised chip architecture with significantly increased AI performance and faster memory. The focus is particularly on on-device AI, high multi-thread performance and improved connectivity – packaged in a familiar but technically massively upgraded overall package.

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max: focus on AI and multithreaded power

At the heart of the new models are the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Both are based on an advanced Fusion architecture that combines two dies in one system-on-a-chip. According to the manufacturer, a new CPU with up to 18 cores is used, including six particularly powerful “super cores”. Multi-thread performance is said to increase by up to 30 percent compared to the previous generation.

The new GPU generation is particularly exciting: each graphics core has an integrated Neural Accelerator. This has a direct impact on AI workloads. According to Apple, the processing of LLM prompts in tools such as LM Studio is up to four times faster than with M4 Pro and M4 Max. Compared to M1 Pro and M1 Max, performance increases of up to eight times are even possible in AI image generation.

Classic Pro applications also benefit. According to the manufacturer, 3D rendering in Maxon Redshift, video effects in Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Studio or AI video enhancement in Topaz Video are significantly accelerated. The M5 Pro supports up to 64 GB of shared memory with 307 GB/s bandwidth, while the M5 Max supports up to 128 GB and 614 GB/s. This clearly positions the device for data-intensive workflows such as 8K editing, simulations or local AI training.

Faster SSD, modern connectivity and macOS Tahoe

In addition to the pure computing power, the storage performance has also been increased. According to the manufacturer, the SSD achieves read and write speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s – up to twice as fast as its direct predecessor. At the same time, the basic configuration has been increased: 1 TB is standard for the M5 Pro, 2 TB for the M5 Max.

Another innovation is the new N1 chip for wireless communication. It enables WLAN 7 and Bluetooth 6 and should ensure more stable and faster connections. There are also three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI with support for up to 8K, SDXC card slot and MagSafe 3. Depending on the model, up to four external displays can be operated.

The Liquid Retina XDR display offers up to 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR) and 1,000 nits for SDR content. Nanotextured glass is available as an option. The setup is complemented by a 12 MP center stage camera, studio microphones and a 6-speaker system with 3D audio.

On the software side, macOS Tahoe is used. The system integrates advanced Spotlight functions, live translation in FaceTime and Messages as well as new AI features under the umbrella of Apple Intelligence. Many of these functions run directly on the device, which improves both latency and data protection aspects.

Conclusion

With the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple is clearly focusing on AI acceleration and professional high-end workflows. More basic memory, higher bandwidth and modern interfaces round off the package. Prices start at 2,499 euros for the 14-inch model with M5 Pro, while the M5 Max variants start at 4,199 euros. Pre-orders are possible from March 4, with deliveries starting on March 11.
