Along with the public beta of iOS 27, Apple has now also released macOS 27 Golden Gate as a public beta. Interested users with compatible MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis, or Mac Studios can try out the update right away—all it takes is free registration with the Apple Beta Software Program.
Installation and Requirements
To install the beta, users must first sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program for free. The beta version can then be selected, downloaded, and installed in System Preferences under “General → Software Update → Beta Updates.” Apple strongly recommends performing a full backup before installation, as critical software bugs cannot be ruled out in beta versions. macOS 27 also runs exclusively on Macs with Apple ARM chips—Intel-based models are not supported.
Siri AI as the Key New Feature
Arguably the most significant change involves Siri: For the first time in macOS 27, the voice assistant is based on a large language model, making it feel more like a classic AI chatbot than previous versions of Siri. Thanks to deep system integration, Siri AI is designed not only to answer questions but also to directly adjust system settings. Apple Intelligence has also been expanded and can now independently generate images and Safari extensions.
Performance and Design Tweaks
In addition to AI integration, macOS 27 brings several improvements that benefit all users, regardless of whether they use Siri: These include faster file transfers via AirDrop and an improved search function in Apple’s Mail app. Visually, the toolbars now have a more consistent look, and the transparency of the Liquid Glass design can be customized in the future.
A Look Ahead to the Final Release
macOS 27 Golden Gate was unveiled at WWDC in early June and became available as a developer beta shortly thereafter. With the public beta release, the final version is now drawing nearer; it is expected in September or October—likely in tandem with the launch of iOS 27, which also places a strong emphasis on new AI features.
