Micron 9650: First PCIe 6.0 SSD goes into series production and doubles performance

The next evolutionary stage in high-performance storage has been reached: the Micron 9650 is the first NVMe SSD based on PCIe 6.0 to enter mass production. The focus is clearly on data centers, AI infrastructure and data-intensive workloads. While consumer systems are still barely prepared for PCIe 6.0, the new SSD is already sending a clear signal for the future of extremely fast storage solutions.

With the Micron 9650, Micron Technology is bringing the first PCIe 6.0 SSD into series production. This is the first time that the new interface has reached a relevant production stage – a technological milestone for enterprise storage.

PCIe 6.0 once again doubles the theoretical bandwidth compared to PCIe 5.0. In practice, this means sequential read speeds of up to around 28 GB/s and write speeds of around 14 GB/s for the Micron 9650. This is roughly twice the performance of many current PCIe 5.0 SSDs in the server segment. Micron also promises several million IOPS for random accesses, which is particularly important for parallel database queries or AI workloads.

Storage performance is increasingly a bottleneck, especially for AI training, inference models and data-intensive analysis. Modern GPUs and accelerators can process enormous amounts of data – provided the storage infrastructure can keep up. This is where the Micron 9650 comes in: The increased bandwidth reduces latencies and increases efficiency in highly scaling environments. The fact that the SSD is initially aimed exclusively at professional applications therefore seems technically logical.

Focus on AI infrastructure instead of gaming PC

The Micron 9650 is available in typical server form factors such as E1.S and E3.S. These designs are specially designed for dense rack installations in data centers and enable optimized cooling and high scalability. Different variants are designed to cover different performance and efficiency profiles.

For classic desktop PCs or gaming systems, PCIe 6.0 does not play a role for the time being. Corresponding platforms, mainboards and controllers are currently hardly available. Even PCIe 5.0 is not yet widely established in the consumer sector. Against this backdrop, the strategic focus on data centers seems plausible: this is where the greatest performance requirements and budgets for early technology adoption arise.

In the long term, however, PCIe 6.0 should also arrive in the workstation and enthusiast segment. The series production of the Micron 9650 therefore marks less of an immediate upheaval in the gaming sector, but rather an important development step for the next generation of high-performance memory systems.
