The introduction of Microsoft’s planned “Recall” feature for the Copilot+ program in Windows 11 has been delayed once again. The test launch in the Windows Insider Program was originally scheduled for October, but Microsoft is now postponing this to December. Users can expect Recall to provide an innovative history of their activities, which should make it easier to find files.
- Overview of functions: Review of activities over up to 30 days
- Exclusively for Copilot+ on devices with powerful NPUs
- Fields of application: Making it easier to find files, images and websites
The features of Recall and the delay
The “Recall” feature, exclusive to the Copilot+ version, is aimed at PCs with modern NPUs, such as the Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Core Ultra. Recall creates a searchable history of activity going back up to 30 days, making it easy to organize and access files, websites and more. This data is processed locally, which protects user privacy.
Selected PCs should be eligible for the first test version in the Insider Program from October 2024. Devices with Intel and AMD chips were to follow in November, but this has now been postponed until next December. This also affects the parallel introduction of other Copilot+ features such as real-time subtitles and the “Studio Effects” system for video conferencing.
What users can expect from the “Recall” feature
“Recall” provides an extensive history that allows users to track and find previous activities on a timeline. This means that users can find past websites, image files or text documents without having to remember details such as file names or storage locations. This could be a useful extension for Windows 11, especially for business and power users, making multitasking and data management easier.
Availability
With the planned launch in the Windows Insider Program, Recall will initially only be available to Insiders and users of Copilot+-enabled PCs. Microsoft is aiming for a public rollout in 2025 as soon as the feature has been successfully tested.
