Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Leak: First details promise an exciting notebook

As we already know, Redmond is working on a new notebook. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is expected to arrive this year. In a screenshot, all the specs of the upcoming notebook have surfaced, which already whet the appetite for the device.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 leak: screenshot reveals details

WindowsPrime has leaked the technical specifications of the upcoming Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 in a screenshot. According to the screenshot, the new notebook will have a similar display as its predecessor. Once again, we are talking about a 13.5-inch version and a 15-inch model with the already known PixelSense display. What is new, however, is that the panels work with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which enables a smoother display.

Specifically, the following display specifications are available according to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 leak:

  • 13.5-inch model: 2,256 x 1,504 pixel resolution (201 ppi), 3:2 aspect ratio, 1,500:1 contrast ratio, 10 point multi-touch
  • 15-inch model: 2,496 x 1,664 pixels resolution (201 ppi), 3:2 aspect ratio, 1,500:1 contrast ratio, 10 point multi-touch

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 leak promises AMD and Intel CPUs

We can also expect an innovation in terms of CPUs, as prospective buyers are supposed to have the choice between AMD and Intel for the Surface Laptop 5. On the one hand, the AMD Ryzen 5 6680U with 6 cores and Ryzen 7 6980U with 8 cores, which have been specially adapted for Microsoft, are to be available for selection in a “Surface Edition”. More detailed information about the changes compared to the standard model is not available, though. However, the identifier indicates that they are variations of the AMD Rembrandt APUs introduced in January 2022 with Zen 3+ and RDNA-2 GPU.

As for the Intel counterpart, according to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 leak, the choice is between the Core i5-1240P and the Core i7-1280P. Two already known mobile processors of the Alder Lake generation with hybrid architecture and integrated Xe graphics.

In the case of the 1240P, 4 performance and 8 efficiency cores are available, whereas the 1280P has six and eight cores, respectively. However, the RAM connection with LPDDR4X is surprising, since both CPU manufacturers now use LPDDR5. Possibly this is a typo.

USB-C and Thunderbolt 4

In terms of ports, the Surface Laptop 5 has a lot going for it. Two USB-C ports are new, which also support the fast Thunderbolt 4 standard or USB 4.0. In addition, there is a USB Type-A port, a 3.5 mm jack, and the Surface Connect port already known from the predecessor.

Larger battery

The battery capacity is also exciting in the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 leak, where the notebook also increases. Instead of 46 Wh in the predecessor, the new laptop has 58 Wh and should thus last much longer.

The AMD model obviously has the lead, because the spec sheet speaks of around 19 hours of battery life for the 13.5-inch Intel model, and 21 hours for the comparable AMD counterpart. On the other hand, the 15 incher has 19.5 hours (AMD Ryzen) and 17.5 hours (Intel).

Of course, the leaked specifications should be taken with a grain of salt, as always. Although the spec sheet seems quite authentic. When the Surface Laptop 5 will be presented to the public and available is currently still unclear.
