Microsoft Surface Pro 9: New Windows tablet officially unveiled

With the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, the company has officially unveiled the latest model in its Windows tablet series. It once again comes with an optional keyboard cover and is equipped with Intel Core processors or a powerful ARM chip.

Microsoft Surface Pro 9 in detail

The exciting Microsoft Surface Pro 9 2-in-1 tablet comes with some interesting new features. The device is optionally offered with Intel Core processors of the 12th generation, the Intel Core i5-1235U or Intel Core i7-1255U, which combine two performance cores with eight efficiency cores and an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics unit.

New, however, is the optionally available ARM chip in the form of the Microsoft SQ3, which is again based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3. This eight-core CPU is manufactured in a 5 nm process and relies on four powerful ARM Cortex-X1 processing cores and four efficient Cortex-A78 cores.

In combination with the SQ3 chip, the Surface Pro 9 also always has an integrated 5G modem, which is conspicuous by its absence in the Intel model. In addition, there is 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB LPDDR5 RAM in the Intel model, as well as 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR4x RAM in the ARM tablet.

The SSDs are replaceable in both variants and can be configured with 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB. The Intel model even has up to 1 TB of storage available. There are also differences in terms of battery life. The tablet with Microsoft SQ3 is supposed to last up to 19 hours, while the Intel variant promises a maximum of 15.5 hours.

High-resolution displays with 120 Hz

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 relies on a 13-inch PixelSense Flow display with a resolution of 2880 x 1920 pixels, a contrast ratio of 1,200:1 and a maximum brightness of 450 nits in both variants. Also on offer is a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and, of course, 10-point touch control.

However, only the Intel model offers Dolby Vision IQ for adaptive brightness adjustment when displaying HDR content. Both displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The weight of both variants is also almost identical: 879 grams (Intel) versus 878 grams (SQ3). The dimensions of 287 mm x 209 mm x 9.3 mm (length x width x height) are even the same.

In addition, there are two 2-watt stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, two far-field studio microphones and two cameras, whereby the front one also enables logging in via Windows Hello and resolves in 1080p. The rear camera resolves with 10 megapixels and allows videos in 4K resolution.

The Surface Pro 9 with Intel processors offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB Type-C), while the SQ3 model has to make do with two USB-C 3.2 ports. In return, there is a nano-SIM slot according to the 5G modem. Both variants also share the Surface Connect port and the Surface Type Cover port for docking the optionally available keyboard cover. Fast Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1 are offered by all variants.

Prices and Availability

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 should be available in this country on November 08, 2022 and can be configured and pre-ordered now at the Microsoft Store. It starts at an MSRP of 1,299.00 Euros for the Intel variant with Core i5 with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. The Core i7 model is already equipped with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD as standard and starts at 1,859.00 Euros.

The ARM version with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD will cost at least 1,549.00 Euros. The optional Surface Pro Keyboard costs at least another 149.99 Euros, and the new Surface Pro Signature Keyboard costs 179.99 Euros.
