Minecraft tournament: DDoS attacks paralyze Internet in Andorra

During a Minecraft tournament, there have been DDoS attacks on the IPS of players participating from Andorra. The attacks, which in all likelihood were aimed at preventing the players in question from continuing to participate in the tournament, have led to massive internet problems throughout the small state.

Tournament was broadcast live

The tournament in question was the Squidcraft tournament, which was broadcast live on the twitch.tv platform and reached more than a million viewers. The principle of the tournament was simple: it was supposed to combine the basic structure of the series Squidgame with the game Minecraft – a classic one-on-one tournament in the elimination process. The prize money was $100,000.

Game players from Andorra also participated in the tournament. Among them were at least eight who were excluded during the tournament due to repeated Internet disconnections. In turn, targeted DDoS attacks were behind these internet disconnections, leading to the assumption that the only ISP of the small European state was targeted in order to exclude the gamblers from the tournament.

Internet partially down

The attacks on the ISP occurred in several waves and brought Internet service in the small state to and beyond its breaking point. At times, it was almost impossible to establish an Internet connection throughout the country. Andorra Telecom, the country’s ISP, announced via Twitter, “Various DDoS attacks intended to affect the programming of some Youtubers have affected the Internet and 4G services of some Andorra Telecom customers.”

It is currently unknown whether further investigations are being carried out into the background.
