Motorola Defy: Rugged outdoor smartphone available from 329 euros

Motorola goes full throttle in the smartphone fall. Besides the new models of the Edge 20 series, the manufacturer launches the Motorola Defy, an extremely rugged outdoor smartphone with decent specs at a competitive price.

The specs of the Motorola Defy

If you are looking for a new smartphone for the toughest outdoor use, you should take a closer look at the new Motorola Defy. The extremely robust outdoor smartphone relies on a steel frame including a reinforced interior, which is supposed to survive drops from up to 1.8 meters.

According to the IP68 standard, the Defy is protected against sand, dust, dirt, water, humidity, and salt spray, while the manufacturer claims that it can withstand up to 35 minutes in a water depth of 1.5 meters thanks to a double-sealed case. The military standard MIL-SPEC 810H ensures that the smartphone can cope with even the most extreme temperatures between -30° C and + 75° C.

Inside the 232-gram smartphone, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 eight-core processor (four cores clocked at 2 GHz, four cores clocked at 1.8 GHz) performs its duty along with 4 GB of working memory. 64 GB of system storage is also offered, which can be expanded via microSD card slot. The 6.5-inch HD+ display of the Defy offers a resolution of 1,600 x 720 pixels and is protected by 0.7 mm thick Gorilla Glass Victus.

When it comes to the camera setup, the Motorola Defy offers a 48-MP f/1.8 main camera, which is supported by a 2-MP depth camera and a 2-MP macro camera. An 8-megapixel selfie camera does its job at the front.  Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack round out the specifications. Unfortunately, 5G is not available. In return, the installed 5000 mAh battery is quite generous and should guarantee a long battery runtime in combination with the SoC. Motorola’s Defy is charged via USB-C with up to 20 watts.

Noteworthy: The Defy ships with Android 10, but Lenovo has already confirmed an update to Android 11. In addition, the outdoor smartphone will be supplied with security updates for two years.

Price and Availability

The Bullit-built Motorola Defy will be available starting Aug. 25 on Motorolarugged.com, Motorola.com and in stores. The manufacturer’s MSRP is 329.00 Euros.
