motorola defy satellite link: Bluetooth device with two-way satellite messaging technology unveiled

To coincide with MWC 2023, Bullitt and Motorola have unveiled the motorola defy satellite link, a compact Bluetooth device that uses two-way satellite messaging technology to provide location notification and SOS help calls even where cellular reception is not available.

motorola defy satellite link introduced

The motorola defy satellite link is a universal Bluetooth device that provides satellite connectivity to any iOS or Android smartphone. The only requirement is that the device has iOS 14 or Android 10 or higher, respectively.

As part of the motorola defy rugged series, the Bluetooth device is particularly robust and equipped for outdoor use. It is designed to provide connectivity wherever there is no network coverage and thus provide additional security while traveling, hiking or other outdoor activities.

The motorola defy satellite link is a compact, lightweight and universal hotspot Bluetooth accessory. A satellite connection can be established via the Bullitt Satellite Messenger application, allowing users to take advantage of a variety of features. These include true two-way messaging via satellite, as well as location messaging and SOS assistance.

The device also has a grab handle with a carabiner so it can be conveniently attached to a belt, backpack or similar. It has passed the Mil Spec 810H test, and is IP68 waterproof and dustproof. The 600 mAh battery provides battery life for several days. Charging, according to the promo pictures, is apparently via USB.

Particularly handy: the integrated SOS button and the location button work even when the device is not connected to the smartphone.

How Bullitt Satellite Connect works

Bullitt Satellite Messenger is the first NTN satellite or “direct-to-device” service based on 3GPP standards. Through this service, the motorola defy satellite link accesses geostationary satellites. With a clear view of the sky, this allows messages to be sent via satellite.

“The device establishes a direct link to geostationary satellites orbiting 35,000 kilometers above the Earth. Text messages can be sent via Bullitt Satellite Messenger when neither cellular nor Wi-Fi is available. Even recipients without Bullitt Messenger can receive messages as a simple SMS to their phone,” the manufacturer explains.

What does Bullitt Satellite Connect cost? But of course the service is not free. After all, only the subscriber of satellite messages is responsible for the cost, the recipient pays nothing extra. Subscriptions are already available from 4.99 euros per month, but exact details of the tariff model is not yet called. SOS Assist – with 24/7 access to emergency call centers provided by FocusPoint International – is available free for the first year at launch.

Price and availability

The motorola defy satellite link will be available in stores in April 2023. It starts at a price of 119 euros for the device alone. A bundle including an annual subscription to the Essentials messaging service plan (30 two-way messages per month and SOS Assist) starts at 169 euros. More details are available on Motorola’s official website.
