Mozilla Thunderbird on Android and iOS: email client coming

The popular Mozilla Thunderbird email client, which is based on open source code, is soon to launch on Android and iOS devices, where it will be an alternative to existing mail apps.

Mozilla Thunderbird Android and iOS version coming

Ryan Lee, product and business development manager for Mozilla Thunderbird at MZLA Technologies Corporation, has confirmed via Twitter that a mobile app of the email client is already in the pipeline and should be released soon.

However, before a release in the Google Play Store and as a free .APK package, they want to rework the UI/UX design. Since this involves a lot of work, the release could still take a while.

First of all, a version for Android is planned, because an iOS implementation would involve more work. However, they are working on a plan to launch Mozilla Thunderbird on Apple devices as well, so Lee.

Mozilla Thunderbird version 102 takes priority

Even before the mobile app is released, Thunderbird is expected to launch on desktop devices with a new version that comes with many improvements. Version 102 is expected to mark a major update and be released before the end of 2022.

New features include a Spaces toolbar, integration of the secure Matrix protocol, a new address book, link preview cards and an enhanced import/export function. In addition, links sent in emails are to be able to be displayed directly as a preview including an image – similar to a social media snippet for Twitter or Facebook.

However, it will be a while before Mozilla Thunderbird 102 is released. The current version 91.9.0 was released only on May 03, 2022, while version 100 is available for download for beta testers.
