MSI announces its own gaming SSDs with up to 4 TB of memory

The Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer MSI will now also enter the NAND memory production. MSI announced its first two SSDs with up to 4 TB of storage and read speeds of up to 7 GB/s and 6.9 GB/s write.

First SSDs from MSI

MSI then also enters the mass storage market with the new SSDs. The manufacturer gave a small preview at CES 2021 in January. The new SSDs will then have a heat sink at an incredible read speed of 7000 MB/s and a write speed of 6900 MB/s. Only the Phison E18 can be considered as the controller for this write rate, even though the manufacturer did not provide any more detailed information at the CES. Only the Phison E18 is currently specified with such a high write rate; other controllers could also be used for reading.

The individual components of the SSDs will most likely be placed on a 10-layer PCB. MSI then wants to offer the SSDs with storage capacities of up to 4 TB. TLC with 3 bits per cell is used as NAND and PCIe 4.0 x4 as interface. In total, there will be two SSDs from MSI in different designs with different heat sinks for now.

Availability and price

There is still no information available about the price and also the availability. Here, only a “coming soon” was given at the CES. It might be possible to infer the price from the competition; an SSD with similar values is offered by Gigabyte with 2 TB of storage at a price of about 400 Euros.
