Netflix: Subscribers now also get games for their smartphone

Squid Game, House of Money, Stranger Things, etc. The list of successful hits on Netflix could probably be continued forever. In particular, the closed cinemas during the corona-related global lockdowns have ensured that the streaming provider is doing better than ever before. However, the rich profits are now not only to flow into new film and series productions. In addition, Netflix now wants to offer the gaming community among its own subscribers a small but nice goodie. They will now also be able to access selected games. Five games make the beginning, but more should certainly follow.

For now, only on Android devices

This is by no means an exclusive expansion of the service catalog, which is only reserved for certain countries. Netflix subscribers around the world will be able to “bing” not only series, but also gamble, starting today, November 3, 2021. In advance, however, the service will only be available for Android devices. Owners of an iPhone or iPad need not be sad, however. They will soon be able to enjoy Netflix games as well. However, it is not yet known when this will happen.

It’s very easy to get the games. Just take a look at the Google Play Store and download them there. In order to know which games are currently available, a separate tab will be introduced in the Netflix app in the future, which will advertise new releases as well as existing games. The download itself is free, but you will need a subscription to the popular streaming service to play the game. Especially cool: an active Internet connection is often not required for playing. Thus, Netflix emphasizes in its press release that the majority of the games should also be able to be played offline.

Five games make the beginning

With the introduction of the new service, five games will initially be made available. These are Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast and Teeter Up. The choice of games around the streaming hit Stranger Things is hardly surprising. After all, the series was extremely successful, especially in the gaming community. The other three games, on the other hand, are not very story-heavy, but rather intended as a pastime for in between. After all, they are classic games of skill and thought.

Since there are no other mobile games yet that revolve around a Netflix production, it remains to be seen which genres you will primarily find here. We think that Netflix will have to team up with developer studios sooner or later to initiate its own developments. Apple and Google show how well this can work with their gaming subscriptions. Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass not only deliver ad-free games, but also high-quality ones. Whether Netflix can compete in the long run remains to be seen.
