Netflix wants to show toughness on account sharing

Netflix seems to be getting serious in its fight against shared accounts. At least, that is what the FAQ on its own website says. Here, the company also reiterates that the new measures will be implemented with immediate effect.

Account sharing at Netflix no longer without consequences

Hand on heart. Do you use your own account with Netflix or are you a beneficiary of a family member or friend? Possibly you also make your account available to others so they can enjoy the streaming service’s many movies and series? Of course, this is a big thorn in Netflix’s side. After all, the company loses billions in revenue when several people use the same account. Netflix has tried many things to counteract this trend. For example, the streaming service wanted to gain new customers with its cheaper advertising subscription, which started in November 2022 in this country. Since that backfired, the frustration apparently discharged as the company left a questionable post in its own FAQs on February 01.

Here, the service threatened to enforce drastic measures on account sharing. Netflix then deleted the post immediately. This initially caused surprise, as it made it seem as if the streaming service was distancing itself from its own statements. Now another blog post in the FAQ followed, announcing an immediate implementation of the measures. It seems that these are indeed the measures that the streaming service already announced in its post from February 01. However, one thing is missing from the new pamphlet. Thus, the service now no longer talks about the fact that every single registered device has to be confirmed once a month via the main account. Nevertheless, the streaming service wants to stick to the fact that a “profile administrator” must be named.

Account only for residents of a household

In its FAQ, Netflix once again emphasizes that an account with the streaming service may only be shared with other residents of one’s household. Conversely, users not living in the household should take care of their own subscription. Those who still want to share their Netflix account with others will probably have to pay a fee. No prices have yet been set for Germany in this regard. The situation is different in Spain and Portugal, for example. Here, you have to pay 5.99 euros and 3.99 euros per month for each additional profile.

However, this does not mean that you can add an infinite number of profiles at a good rate. Rather, you have to buy the possible additional profiles by choosing the corresponding rate. Specifically, this means that you can’t add another profile in both the ad-financed and ad-free basic tariff. Those on the Standard tariff should be able to buy another profile on top. Subscribers on the premium tariff are allowed to buy a maximum of two additional profiles. But whether this option will also be opened to Netflix customers in this country is currently still questionable.

Test in South America apparently successful

Its latest measures against account sharing Netflix introduces of course not bang on fall worldwide. Previously, the streaming service tested the whole thing in South America. Apparently, these tests seem to have been successful. After all, other countries are now following suit. Not only New Zealand and Canada are included. The countries just named, Portugal and Spain, are now also facing the new measures. We are curious when German Netflix users will feel the impact.
