AVM is launching a completely new generation of FritzBox routers at IFA 2026. Leading the way is the FritzBox 6690 Pro, which is available now and is the world’s first cable router with tri-band Wi-Fi 7. Also being introduced are a new flagship design for fiber and DSL, a 5G router with power bank functionality, a mesh repeater with speeds of up to 18 Gbit/s, two new smart home devices, and the FritzOS 8.50 update.

In a nutshell:

  • FritzBox 6690 Pro: the world’s first Wi-Fi 7 cable router, launching on September 1, 2026
  • FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90: new flagship design, 12.2 Gbit/s Wi-Fi 7, nominated for the German Design Award
  • FritzBox 5630 XGS and FritzBox 6835 5G: Fiber with 10 Gbps and 5G with up to 2 Gbps, respectively
  • FritzRepeater 6700 Pro: Quad-band mesh repeater with up to 18 Gbps
  • FritzSmart Energy 201 and FritzSmart Thermo 303 expand the smart home portfolio
  • FritzOS 8.50 introduces a DNS filter, Matter Bridge, and a redesigned MyFritzApp
  • AVM has not yet announced prices for most models

FritzBox 6690 Pro: First cable router with Wi-Fi 7

The FritzBox 6690 Pro is available in stores starting today and is positioned as the successor to the FritzBox 6660 Cable. AVM is promoting it as the world’s first cable router with tri-band Wi-Fi 7 and an integrated DOCSIS modem. For the smart home, it offers support for Zigbee and DECT, allowing lights, outlets, and thermostat controls to be integrated directly through the router—without the need for a separate gateway.

FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90: New Design, 12.2 Gbit/s Wi-Fi

The FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90, which AVM is unveiling as a world premiere at IFA, is likely to attract significantly more attention. It combines DSL and fiber-optic connections (GPON and AON) in a single device and breaks with the familiar FritzBox design: A streamlined, minimalist housing with just one button and one LED, eleven antennas in the upper part of the housing, and hidden cable management are designed to keep your desk tidy. The wall mount even fits the drill holes from the old FritzBox 7590. The 7-90 has been nominated for the German Design Award for its clean design.

Under the hood, it features Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 with up to 12.2 Gbit/s total throughput, plus multi-gigabit ports for WAN and LAN, as well as DECT and Zigbee for smart home devices. Despite its high performance, AVM states that the router consumes only about 12 watts under moderate load and remains completely passively cooled—that is, without a fan.

FritzBox 5630 XGS and FritzBox 6835 5G: Fiber Optics and Mobile Networks with Wi-Fi 7

In addition to these two flagship models, AVM is expanding its mid-range lineup with two more Wi-Fi 7 models.

FritzBox 5630 XGS

The FritzBox 5630 XGS is designed for XGS-PON fiber-optic connections with speeds of up to 10 Gbps. It offers dual-band Wi-Fi 7 (2,880 Mbps at 5 GHz, 688 Mbit/s at 2.4 GHz), a 10 Gbit/s multifunction port, three Gigabit LAN ports, USB 3.0, and telephony via DECT, IP/SIP, and the analog port.

FritzBox 6835 5G

The FritzBox 6835 5G is designed for anyone who needs fast internet without a landline connection, such as when working from home in rural areas or as a mobile solution. The router supports 5G and 4G with download speeds of up to 2 Gbit/s and upload speeds of up to 900 Mbit/s, works with Nano-SIM or eSIM, and can even be powered by a power bank thanks to its USB-C power supply. An alignment guide shows the optimal position for the best reception, and the FritzFailsafe feature turns the device into a mobile backup solution in case the landline connection fails.

FritzRepeater 6700 Pro: Mesh Repeater with Up to 18 Gbps

For larger apartments and houses, AVM offers the FritzRepeater 6700 Pro, a quad-band repeater with Wi-Fi 7. It transmits simultaneously on 6 GHz, two 5 GHz bands, and 2.4 GHz, achieving a combined data rate of up to 18 Gbit/s. The two 5-GHz modules enable an additional wireless link within the mesh network, which is designed to ensure more stable connections—especially in multi-story buildings. Convenient: The repeater can be set up on any Wi-Fi router via WPS, automatically adopting the SSID and password.

Smart Home: FritzSmart Energy 201 and FritzSmart Thermo 303

AVM is also stepping up its game beyond routers. The FritzSmart Energy 201 is a smart outlet with energy monitoring that can handle up to 3,680 watts while consuming less than 0.2 watts itself. It can be controlled by voice via Matter, is compatible with Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home, and works with both the FritzBox 5690 Pro and the FritzSmart Gateway. It will launch in October 2026.

The FritzSmart Thermo 303 is the new radiator thermostat in the lineup, replacing the previous FritzSmart Thermo 302 while remaining compatible with it. New features include an adaptive preheating phase that automatically adjusts the start of heating to the desired target temperature, a window-open detection feature, and a 24-hour temperature history displayed directly on the device. Frost and limescale protection, a boost function, and a key lock are also included; the device can be controlled via the FritzSmart Control 440, FritzFon, or the FritzApp Smart Home.

FritzOS 8.50 and MyFritzApp: What’s New in the Software

Alongside the new hardware, AVM is rolling out FritzOS 8.50. Key new features include a DNS filter to block malware, phishing, and trackers; automatic prioritization for video conferences and other real-time applications; and an enhanced FritzFailsafe function. For older users, there will be a “Simple Mode” for FritzFon in the future, including automated emergency calls. If you’re familiar with the previous update, check out our article on FritzOS 8.20 for a recap of the latest features.

The MyFritzApp is also getting an update: A new Smart Check feature analyzes Wi-Fi coverage and router location and provides specific recommendations, along with direct links to store and service pages and an integrated FRITZ! chatbot. For owners of the FritzBox 5690 Pro, a new Matter Bridge feature ensures better connectivity with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

Pricing, Availability, and Classification

AVM has so far only provided indirect information on specific prices: The FritzBox 6690 Pro is now available in stores, and the FritzSmart Energy 201 is set to follow in October 2026. For the FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90, FritzBox 5630 XGS, FritzBox 6835 5G, and FritzRepeater 6700 Pro, the manufacturer has not yet announced a price or a fixed launch date—which is not unusual for AVM announcements at trade shows. All new products will be on display at IFA 2026 in Hall 7.2c, Booth 111. AVM also highlights European manufacturing and partnerships with SAFENet and VTKE—a nod to digital sovereignty—as the manufacturer capitalizes on a politically charged topic just in time for its 40th anniversary.

Conclusion: Is it worth switching to the new generation of FritzBoxes?

With the new generation, AVM covers virtually every connection type: cable, DSL, fiber, and 5G—all with Wi-Fi 7. However, only one model is currently available for purchase: the FritzBox 6690 Pro, which is already on the market and offers cable customers a noticeable Wi-Fi upgrade. Those relying on DSL or fiber will have to be patient. AVM has not announced either the price or the release date for the FritzBox DSL/Fiber 7-90, the FritzBox 5630 XGS, and the FritzBox 6835 5G, AVM has not announced either the price or the release date, and without these two details, it’s hard to say whether the upgrade is actually worth it. We’ll update this article as soon as AVM provides specific dates.
