OnePlus could really shake up the handheld market: According to a recent leak, the company is said to be working on an Android gaming handheld with a modified Dimensity 9500, whose GPU allegedly reaches “console level” – without any overclocking at all. What is known about the device so far sounds promising.
- Optimized Dimensity 9500: The ARM Mali G1-Ultra MC12 GPU is to be installed in a modified version, which, according to leaker Digital Chat Station, delivers a “significant performance boost”
- 8-inch display with flagship performance tuning and multi-finger touch tracking
- FPS-focused control concept instead of classic joystick layouts – optimized for shooter titles
- Smartphone features included: SIM slot, cameras and USB-C indicate a hybrid device
OnePlus gaming handheld: The chip behind the promise
At the center of the leaks is the MediaTek Dimensity 9500, or more precisely an adapted variant of it. The well-known and reliable insider Digital Chat Station reports on Weibo that OnePlus has specifically optimized the chip’s GPU – the ARM Mali G1-Ultra MC12 – and is said to have already achieved impressive results. Without any overclocking, this modified GPU is said to achieve “console-level” performance, which Digital Chat Station describes as a “significant leap” compared to the production version.
Interestingly, the Dimensity 9500 did not initially have an easy time with gamers. The chipset was only able to hold its own against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips thanks to improved emulator support for Mali GPUs. Although the Mali G1-Ultra MC12 already masters native Android AAA titles with ease, there are still slight weaknesses when it comes to emulating PC games. This is precisely where the version optimized by OnePlus should come in and give the chip the decisive edge. According to Digital Chat Station, the performance boost would turn the device into a “Mini-Dimensity 9600” – a remarkable statement that raises expectations.
Design and controls: not a classic handheld
In addition to the chip performance, the design is also causing a stir. Leaked render images show a handheld in black and purple with console-like grip shells, visually reminiscent of an upgraded smartphone. An 8-inch display should provide sufficient gaming space, while two shoulder buttons and programmable special buttons underline the gaming focus.
The control concept is particularly striking: instead of the usual joystick-plus-buttons layout, OnePlus has apparently opted for an FPS-optimized input system that combines physical triggers with precise multi-finger touchscreen tracking. This makes the device particularly interesting for shooter fans who play mobile titles such as PUBG Mobile or Delta Force. There is also a SIM slot, rear cameras and a USB-C port – the device can therefore also be used as a full-fledged smartphone, which clearly sets it apart from competitors such as Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally.
Classification: Promising, but still a rumor
The device is still clearly in the rumor phase at the moment. An official announcement by OnePlus is still pending, and even a reliable leaker such as Digital Chat Station cannot guarantee an actual market launch. OnePlus has repeatedly shown in the past that flagship performance is possible at surprisingly attractive prices – if the gaming handheld continues this tradition, it would be a serious contender in the growing Android handheld segment.
There are no details on price and availability yet. All eyes are on a possible official announcement, which according to reports could be expected soon.
