Onyx LZR: Two new S-pedelecs introduced

Onyx has unveiled a new S-pedelec in the form of the LZR, which is offered in two differently powerful variants. Available are the up to 45 km/h fast devices as part of a pre-sales campaign in the USA.

No e-bike registration in Germany

On German roads, the LZR and LZR Pro will not be able to be ridden as e-bikes despite their bike-typical appearance – both models are too powerful for this. With pedal assistance, speeds of up to 45 km/h can be achieved, so the vehicles are considered S-pedelecs and may only be ridden on public roads with an insurance license plate and corresponding driving permit. In this case, wearing a safety helmet is also a legal requirement.

The weaker version is powered by a mid-mounted motor that generates 500 watts of power. For up to 30 seconds, it is capable of delivering a peak output of 615 watts. On the Pro variant, on the other hand, Onyx relies on a Bafang motor that manages a continuous output of 900 and a short-term peak output of 1,050 watts. The maximum achievable torque is 95 or 120 Nm.

Battery and suspension fork

Both models are also equipped with a 504 Wh battery, which should be able to be fully charged within seven hours. The maximum range possible with one battery charge has not yet been announced by Onxy. In addition, there are front and rear disc brakes and a suspension fork with a travel of 100 millimeters. The suspension fork can be adjusted to individual needs and can also be turned off completely if necessary. This is particularly useful when riding on asphalt roads, as it allows for a more direct response and thus a more comfortable ride.

Both wheels are also equipped with LEDs that indicate the selected support mode. However, there is no display. The features of the S-pedelecs, each weighing just under nineteen kilograms, are rounded off by tires from Kenda.

Prices and availability

Both the LZR and LZR Pro are available now as part of a pre-sales campaign in the US. During the campaign period, prices are $2,000 and $2,700, respectively. After that, they are expected to increase significantly. It is not yet known when and at what prices the two bikes will be available in Europe.
