OpenAI presents new Deep Research tool

OpenAI has launched“Deep Research”, a new AI-powered tool that aims to make extensive research tasks more efficient. This tool promises to fundamentally change the way professionals in various industries gather and analyze information.

“Deep Research” utilizes OpenAI’s latest o3 model and is designed to independently perform multi-step research tasks on the Internet. Users can enter queries in the form of text, images or files and the tool will generate comprehensive reports within 5 to 30 minutes. These reports include a summary of the search process as well as references in a sidebar.

Key features of “Deep Research”:

  • Autonomous research: the tool plans and carries out multi-stage research tasks independently.
  • Multimodal input: Support for text, image and file input.
  • Efficient report generation: Generation of comprehensive reports within minutes.
  • Transparent process: Presentation of the research process and the sources used.

This tool is aimed at financial, scientific and engineering professionals and is integrated into the ChatGPT interface for Pro subscribers in the US. It offers the ability to complete complex research tasks that would traditionally take several hours in a much shorter time.

Despite the impressive capabilities of “Deep Research”, there are also limitations. Experts warn against trusting AI-generated content unreservedly, as so-called “hallucinations” can occur in which the AI provides false or misleading information. There may also be difficulties in distinguishing between authoritative information and rumors. OpenAI therefore recommends always checking the results critically and not using them without human verification.

The introduction of deep research comes amid intense competition in the AI sector, particularly with the rise of Chinese AI company DeepSeek, which is shaking up the market with cost-effective models. OpenAI is responding by accelerating product releases and developing new models such as o3-mini, which combines fast performance, cost efficiency and intelligent thinking.

“Deep Research” is currently available for Pro users of ChatGPT in the US, with a limit of up to 100 queries per month for a monthly fee of $200. Access is restricted for other paid plans. OpenAI plans to make the tool available for mobile and desktop applications later in February.

In summary, “Deep Research” represents a significant advance in the application of AI for research tasks. It enables professionals to work more efficiently and comprehensively, but still requires critical human review of the results.
