With the Hue Bridge Pro, Philips Hue has introduced an innovative technology called MotionAware, which transforms Philips Hue lamps into motion detectors without additional sensors. Instead of classic motion detectors, MotionAware uses changes in the Zigbee radio signals to detect movement in the room – provided that three to four lamps are suitably positioned. This innovative approach promises to make smart lighting control significantly more flexible and more widely usable than before.
- MotionAware converts Philips Hue lights into motion detectors without additional hardware.
- Motion is detected via radio frequency changes (Zigbee) in a defined area.
- In future, presence detection will also be possible, allowing lights to be switched off immediately in the event of absence.
- Four MotionAware zones are currently possible per Hue Bridge Pro, but this is to be expanded in the future.
MotionAware: How motion detection via light works
At its core, MotionAware measures fluctuations in the wireless network between the Hue lamps and the Hue Bridge Pro. If a person or object crosses the area, the Zigbee signal strengths change – the software recognizes these changes and interprets them as movement. This eliminates the need for additional motion detectors or cameras, which significantly simplifies installation and maintenance.
At least three lamps are required in a room or area for activation, ideally positioned so that most of the detection area is covered. Detection also works partially if the movement is behind furniture or other obstacles, as the radio waves can penetrate through objects. The sensitivity of the motion detection can be adjusted using a slider to reduce false alarms caused by pets, for example.
Detect presence and expand automation
An exciting next step planned by Philips Hue based on this technology is presence detection. George Yianni, the founder of Philips Hue, revealed this in an interview with HomeKit Insider.

Unlike pure motion detection, presence would detect whether someone is permanently in a room – even if they are not currently moving. This opens up the possibility of switching lights off immediately when the room is empty, instead of having to rely on a delay or time control as before.
This function is not yet available, but Philips Hue is working on enabling more MotionAware zones and further optimizing detection. It should be particularly interesting for pet owners to see whether animal movements can be specifically detected or excluded in future.
Challenges of scaling in the smart home
Four MotionAware zones are currently possible per Hue Bridge Pro, which is sufficient for apartments or smaller houses, for example. Philips Hue is working on scaling the system for more areas and larger buildings. However, the network load caused by the constant communication of the lamps in the Zigbee mesh must be kept in mind so that other smart home applications continue to run stably.
It remains to be seen whether Philips Hue will also release new hardware versions of the classic motion detectors as presence sensors in the future. Although the software detection works surprisingly well without a sensor, there are rooms in which the light position or other conditions challenge the technology. New hardware could close possible gaps here.
Conclusion
Philips Hue MotionAware represents a fascinating step forward in smart lighting control, as it enables motion detection without any additional sensors. The technology uses existing Hue lights and the Hue Bridge Pro, measures radio frequency changes and thus detects movements in the room. Expanded in the future to include presence detection and more zones, the system opens up new automation options while saving network capacity. This will make home automation even more flexible and intuitive without the need to install additional devices. It will be exciting to see exactly what new features and improvements Philips Hue will bring in the future.
