New Philips Hue Play lights for immersive entertainment
The lineup centers on the Hue Play Gradient table lamp (60 cm) and the Play Gradient floor lamp, which is available in a compact version (122 cm) and a large version (133 cm). They are designed to extend lighting effects beyond the TV into the room and—when paired with the Hue Play HDMI Sync Box or the Hue Sync apps for TV and PC—can be synchronized in real time with movies, games, and music.
The pricing strategy is intriguing: With prices of 79.99 euros (table lamp) and around 140 to 150 euros (floor lamp), the new Play models are significantly more affordable than the previous Gradient Signe, which costs over 300 euros for the floor lamp. Hue is clearly targeting Govee’s more affordable competition with this move. Crucially, all three models use RGBWW technology—meaning additional warm white and cool white LEDs for true, cleaner white tones—a clear advantage over pure RGB solutions.
Wall Switch Modules: Even Non-Smart Bulbs Become Hue-Compatible
Perhaps the most practical part of the announcement: new wired wall switch modules that are installed behind the light switch and bring conventional light bulbs into the Hue ecosystem—without having to replace them with smart bulbs. There are several variants available for single and double switches, a dimming module, and a module for existing Hue bulbs. This will allow conventional lights to be controlled via the app, automation, and voice assistants in the future.

According to Signify, the new generation is 40 percent more energy-efficient than its predecessor and offers more consistent color rendering. Important for smart home integration: The bulb now supports Matter, allowing for more flexible integration into various ecosystems.
Overview: A Useful Addition with a Minor Catch
All in all, it’s a well-rounded update: The more affordable Play lights make immersive lighting more accessible, the wall switch modules bridge a real gap between smart and non-smart devices, and Matter support for the candle lamp is long overdue and welcome. There is one downside, however, with the floor lamp: It shares the same housing as its significantly cheaper WiZ counterpart (around 90 euros); both brands are part of Signify. The premium is justified primarily by the superior RGBWW LED technology—whether that’s worth the extra cost is something everyone must decide for themselves.
