Philips Hue: Smart lighting now with Spotify customization

The smart lighting system Philips Hue now dances to the beat of music on Spotify. Until now, the reactive adjustment of the light was possible in combination with smart TVs, but now music lovers can also enjoy the feature.

Light and sound in harmony

The new feature is enabled via the Philips Hue app and is available now. “Philips Hue + Spotify” analyzes the meta-data of the music (in real time) in the app for this purpose and adjusts the smart lighting accordingly.

Thus, the light script should not only reflect the beat of the music and offer corresponding effects or be dimmed. The lighting scripts are perfectly matched to each song and correspond to the genre, mood and beat. Mood, genre, tempo, volume and the pitch directly affect the Philips Hue lighting.

The speed and intensity of the lighting effects can be customized in the app. All that is needed is a Hue Bridge and a White & Color Ambiance lamp or luminaire, as well as the Hue app and a Spotify account. The new feature is free and also works with the music streaming provider’s free account.

The app embedding means that music and lighting are synced at all times, regardless of which audio source is in use. Once both accounts are linked, music can be played from any device with a Spotify account (i.e. cell phone, tablet or computer.

Starting initially in early access

The rollout of Spotify integration in Philips Hue is starting immediately worldwide as part of an Early Access program. It may take up to seven days for the feature to show up in the Hue app. Early Access can then be activated there to test the integration.

On a large scale, the feature is expected to be rolled out as a permanent part of the Hue App 4 starting in October 2021. Philips also confirmed that other music streaming providers will be integrated in the future, but they did not name any.
