Philips Hue SpatialAware takes smart lighting design to a new level

Philips Hue is significantly expanding the possibilities of intelligent lighting with a new function. Hue SpatialAware is intended to replace the previously static light scene management and “understand” rooms spatially for the first time. Instead of predefined color distributions, the system analyses the actual room layout and the position of each individual luminaire. The result is lighting that adapts dynamically to the architecture and furnishings, taking a further step towards a truly intelligent smart home.

  • Spatial analysis of rooms via smartphone camera
  • Intelligent adaptation of lighting scenes to the position of the luminaires
  • More realistic lighting scenes inspired by nature
  • Exclusively for the new Hue Bridge Pro

Hue SpatialAware brings spatial understanding to lighting

With Hue SpatialAware, Signify is introducing a feature that goes beyond classic smart lighting functions. Instead of distributing light scenes across all luminaires, the system creates a digital model of the room. Walls, ceilings and light sources are captured using the camera of a mobile device and modern augmented reality technologies. An algorithm then analyses the position of each Philips Hue light source and calculates how colors and brightness are optimally distributed.

This approach seems plausible, as similar processes are already known from AR applications and robotics. What is new is the consistent application to lighting design in living spaces. The aim is to imitate natural lighting conditions as realistically as possible. For example, warm light can be directed specifically from one direction, while other areas of the room remain cooler or darker. This creates a much more differentiated and immersive lighting experience than with previous scenes.

Setup is carried out via the Hue app and is only possible with the Hue Bridge Pro. The system remains flexible: if new lamps are added or repositioned, the room profile can be updated and automatically optimized by scanning it again.

New light scene dimension and broad update package

The added value of Hue SpatialAware is particularly clear when it comes to natural light scenes. Around half of the pre-installed scenes are already compatible, including motifs such as “Savannah sunset” or “Fog over the lake”. In a sunset scene, lights on one side of the room are bathed in warm yellow and orange tones, while other light points reproduce darker or cooler colors. This makes the light appear less artificial and much more vibrant.

Alongside the introduction of SpatialAware, Philips Hue is further expanding its ecosystem. Apple Home support is being extended to Hue Secure devices, including picture-in-picture streaming on Apple TV. In addition, the Hue Bridge Pro enables the migration of multiple bridges to a central system for the first time. The AI assistant is also evolving: automations can be created based on context and German language support will be added from 2026. This is complemented by a revised display of automations directly in rooms and zones within the app, which makes management much easier.

Conclusion

With Hue SpatialAware, Philips Hue is setting a new standard for smart light scene management. The combination of spatial recognition, intelligent color distribution and simple integration significantly expands the possibilities of modern smart homes. The feature will be available exclusively for the Hue Bridge Pro from spring 2026. Pricing details have not yet been announced, but the function fits perfectly into the long-term strategy of making lighting not just smart, but context-aware.
