In the absence of a PlayStation 5, the recently presented PSVR 2 is not an option for you? Then the right solution will soon be coming from the Far East. With the Pico 4, a promising VR headset is coming our way, which is supposed to score especially with a fighting price.
VR is coming to the masses
In the future, virtual reality will probably not only be interesting for gamers. Rather, there are many indications that we will soon be using VR headsets in the broad masses. The Metaverse thrown into the room by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is probably just one reason for this. But it is not only the social network that is expecting great success from diving into virtual worlds. Other manufacturers are also already in the starting blocks to counter the various planned AR and VR glasses from Meta.
As a leading manufacturer of VR headsets, the Chinese manufacturer PICO is now preparing to throw a low-priced VR headset with a lot of power into the race. With the PICO 4, they want to combine comfort with high performance. According to the company, the goal is to make VR possible for everyone. The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip is supposed to provide enough power, and the two lenses with 4K+ resolution are supposed to provide a sharp image.
The PICO 4 promises a lot of performance for little money
In terms of usability, the Pico 4 is apparently similar to the Oculus Quest 2 or Meta Quest 2. This concerns in particular the fact that the VR goggles can be used without a PC. Two controllers are supposed to be used for operation. The Pico 4 is obviously supposed to be much slimmer than the competition. Special pancake lenses are supposed to make this possible. The two displays have a resolution of 4,320 x 2,160 pixels and offer a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The user can choose between 128 GB or 256 GB of storage space.
A weight of 295 g should ensure high user comfort. A well-padded SuperSkin fabric is also supposed to be used for wearing comfort. This should not only lie comfortably on the skin, but also protect against too much heat and perspiration. The 5,300 mAh battery is supposed to provide a gaming time of up to 3 hours. The PICO 4 offers a quick-charge function so that you can continue quickly afterwards. Spectacle wearers can also enjoy the special glasses spacer. To prevent unintentional damage to the furniture, the PICO 4 has four SLAM cameras. They map and track the surroundings. Modern connectivity in the form of Bluetooth 5.1 and WiFi 6 is also on board.
The PICO 4 controller features an ergonomic design. Cleverly placed infrared sensors should be able to provide precise input. Thanks to HyperSense, PICO also promises realistic haptic feedback. The PICO Store is supposed to provide enough games. It offers an extensive game library, where everyone should be able to find what they are looking for. PICO itself emphasizes its own fitness program. The practical accessories are supposed to provide VR sports at home, but also other controls. In addition to a fitness band, a carrying case is also to be launched.
Price and availability
The RRP of the PICO 4 is said to be 429 euros. Pre-orders are available starting today, September 23, 2022, on the Bestware, VR Expert, XR Shop and System Active platforms. In October, it should also be possible to pre-order from Amazon, Media Markt and Saturn.
