Pioneer continues to push desktop monitor speaker series DM. The two four-inch DM-40D and DM-40D-BT speakers are new additions. While the DM-50D, which just recently passed through our test course, also gets a wireless Bluetooth model called DM-50D-BT to the side.

Pioneer DJ expands DM desktop speaker series

The Pioneer DJ series has made a real name for itself in recent years in the monitor speaker segment, among others. Now the manufacturer is announcing a number of new models in its DM series of desktop monitor systems. Specifically, the DM-40D and DM-40D-BT are two new 4-inch models, while the larger DM-50D, equipped with a 5-inch driver, also gets a Bluetooth variant.

All models are offered in black and white color schemes. They are suitable as all-rounders for various fields of application. From home use to DJing and music production to parties, where especially the new Bluetooth speakers should be exciting.

All models are said to feature powerful, high-quality sound. They are easy to set up and allow uncomplicated fine-tuning of the sound. Via DSP settings, the monitor speakers allow you to quickly switch between DJ and production modes.

But thanks to a tidy, modern look, the speakers from Pioneer’s DJ division also cut a fine figure at home and in the home office. The DM-50D-BT and DM-50D also feature a jack input for quickly and easily connecting headphones. The two new Bluetooth models allow wireless connection to mobile devices for high-quality music playback without wires.

The technical specifications of the new Pioneer DJ speakers

Wirelessly, the two new Bluetooth monitor speakers Pioneer DJ DM-40D-BT and DM-50D-BT radio in the Bluetooth 5.0 standard. Thus, they achieve a maximum transmission distance of about 10 meters to the audio source. They support the Bluetooth profiles A2DP and AVRCP, but differ in terms of codecs.

While the cheaper and smaller DM-40D-BT only supports SBC and AAC, its big brother DM-50D-BT is much more versatile. Here, the Qualcomm codecs aptX and aptX Low Latency are added – only the HD variant is unfortunately missing.

Otherwise, all four new active 2-way bass-reflex monitor speakers offer a Class D amplifier with DSP and 96 kHz sampling rate, which in the 40D comes to 19 watts of output power each on the left and right, and in the 50D to 25 watts each.

RCA and mini-jack connections make it easy to connect the speakers to a wide variety of equipment such as DJ controllers, mixers, a laptop or sound card. The DM-50D-BT and DM-50D offer further connection options via their additional TRS jack input.

The bass-reflex speakers are made of MDF vinyl laminate and rely on 5-inch (DM-50D series) or 4-inch (DM-40D) fiberglass cone woofers, as well as a 3/4-inch soft-dome woofer for rich bass. As with the DM-40 predecessor, cabinet recesses at the sound exit ports reduce air friction. This guarantees tight and punchy bass, even when the speakers are placed against a wall.

Sound convincing

That especially the Pioneer DJ DM-50D has a lot going for it in terms of sound, we were able to determine for ourselves as recently as April 2022 with our test. Here, the speaker duo delivered a convincing performance:

Sound-wise, however, the Pioneer DJ DM-50D do quite a lot right and coped well with all the music genres we threw at them. Electro music impressed with convincing bass for the woofer size, while elaborate productions scored with warm, convincing mids and clear highs.

Pioneer DJ DM-50D review

Only the promised 3D stereo sound and the differences between the two DSP settings could not convince us at the time. The manufacturer now also finally makes up for the missing Bluetooth mode with the new model, which should make the DM-50D-BT in particular an exciting option.

Prices and availability

The new Pioneer DJ desktop monitor speakers are now available in stores. Only the DM-40D-BT will follow in a few days and should be available from early June 2022. Price-wise, it starts at an MSRP of 179 euros for the DM-40D.

The Bluetooth model has an MSRP of 199 euros. The DM-50D speaker pair is available for 239 euros, and the new DM-50D-BT has an MSRP of 269 euros. You can find more information on the product website.
