The PlayStation 5 Pro is officially available for pre-order from today and is causing a stir in the gaming community, not only with its new functions and improved performance. Sony’s high asking price is also the subject of much discussion among the trade press and gamers. Could now be the perfect time to finally buy a normal PlayStation 5?
The most important facts in brief
- Price from 799.99 euros (without drive)
- Improved GPU performance and 2 TB SSD storage
- Stands and drive only available as an option
- Can only be ordered exclusively from Sony for the time being
Drive and stand optional
In direct comparison to the standard PS5, the PlayStation 5 Pro offers hardware improvements that are well worth seeing. Thanks to the AMD RDNA 3 graphics architecture and the new Zen 2 CPU, it achieves higher graphics performance, which should make a noticeable difference, especially in games with demanding effects such as ray tracing or 8K resolution. This should be particularly noticeable in the so-called “graphics mode”, which many games now offer.
Previously, FPS had to be sacrificed in this area, but Sony now promises to reconcile great graphics and smooth image playback. The flash memory has also been increased to 2 TB SSD, leaving more space for large game installations. An important difference to the standard PS5 is the modular design. While the basic model is delivered without a disc drive, gamers can retrofit one for around 120 euros.
This is particularly practical for anyone who already owns the PS5 Slim’s disc drive, as this is also compatible with the Pro version. With these upgrades, the PS5 Pro is aimed at gamers who want to get the maximum performance out of their console. Incidentally, a stand is not included with the PlayStation 5 Pro. This is a shame considering the high price.
Small improvements at a high price
If you are interested in the PlayStation 5 Pro, you can now pre-order it exclusively from Sony’s official online store at a price of 799.99 euros. The sale will initially only take place at Sony itself. To prevent the dreaded scalping, availability will be limited to one unit per PSN account. The official market launch will then take place in November 2024, by which time the console should certainly also be available to order from other major online stores such as Amazon.
Save now on the standard PlayStation 5
If you don’t yet own a PlayStation 5 but have always fancied Sony’s latest home console, you can currently save money on the standard version. This is available in the basic version without drive for 379.00 euros at Amazon, in the standard version with drive for 479.00 euros at Amazon and as a standard version in a bundle with a second controller for 539.00 euros at Amazon.
