PlayStation VR2 and Horizon Call of the Mountain officially introduced

That was fast. After we reported on the start of production of the PSVR2 just yesterday, Sony has now followed up with action and officially unveiled the PlayStation VR2 VR system including PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers for the PS5. We have summarized all the info.

PlayStation VR2 announced for PlayStation 5

With the PlayStation VR2, Sony presents an extensively improved remake of its console VR system launched in 2016, adapted to the additional hardware power of the PlayStation 5.

According to its own statement, the company wants to “take VR gaming to a whole new level” and transport players to worlds like never before. In fact, the official name of the VR headset is simply PlayStation VR2, while it will be controlled using the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, which have been presented in detail in the past.

The PlayStation VR2’s features

The VR2 builds on similar innovations as the Japanese’ current console, the PlayStation 5. Especially the image quality should benefit from the additional power. PS VR2 offers a picture in 4K resolution including HDR and that with a field of view of 110 degrees.

The headset relies on an OLED display with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye and that at a frame rate of 90 or 120 Hz, depending on the game. The headset also features true controller tracking, which allows you and the controllers to be tracked in three-dimensional space. This is made possible by cameras that are installed directly in the VR headset. An external camera near the TV or monitor is no longer needed with PS VR2.

The PS VR2 Sense technology combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D audio and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controllers to create a particularly immersive gaming experience. The headset feedback is a new sensory feature that is generated via a built-in motor.

The motor uses vibrations to ensure that you can immerse yourself even deeper in the VR game in question. As examples, Sony mentions the increased pulse of the game character in exciting moments or objects that fly close to the character’s head.

Combined with the PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D audio technology, this is said to bring the entire environment in games to life, achieving unprecedented immersion.

Together with the PlayStation VR2’s Sense controllers, which feature haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, VR titles, or rather interaction with the virtual world, are said to feel even more realistic and emotional.

Easy installation and first game

The tangle of cables that came with the original PlayStation VR is also history with the new release. The PlayStation VR2 simply connects to the console via a single cable and is ready to go right out of the box.

With Horizon Call of the Mountain from developer Guerrilla and Firesprite, one of the biggest PlayStation exclusive title series is also coming to the new VR glasses. The game is set in the same universe as Horizon: Zero Dawn or Horizon Forbidden West, which will be released in February, and will be released exclusively for PlayStation VR2.

The announcement states:

“We don’t want to give too much away yet, but the story will be told through the eyes of a brand new character. However, you will also meet Aloy and other familiar faces.”
