Poco M4 5G: Budget smartphone launches with strong battery and 90 Hz display

The Poco M4 5G, a slimmed-down version of the M4 Pro 5G introduced last year, is now launching on the global market. Features highlights include a 5,000 mAh battery and a Full HD+ display with a refresh rate of 90 Hz.

In June, Poco officially unveiled its new F4 and X4 GT smartphones. The new Poco M4 5G is expected to be priced even lower. The global website of the Xiaomi sub-brand now shows details of the new model, which will be offered in three colors (Power Black, Cool Blue and POCO Yellow), just like the Pro model from last year.

The budget smartphone measures 163.99 x 76.09 x 8.9 mm (height x width x depth) and weighs 200 grams. It is equipped with a 6.58-inch DotDrop display that resolves in Full HD+ (2,408 x 1,080 pixels) and offers a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz in the 20:9 aspect ratio.

The display gets a maximum brightness of 500 nits and offers a contrast ratio of 1,500:1. It is also protected against scratches by Corning Gorilla Grass. The smartphone is powered by the octa-core CPU MediaTek Dimensity 700, which clocks with up to 2.2 GHz.

The smartphone is optionally available with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of system storage or with 6 GB and 128 GB, whereby the storage of both models can be expanded to a maximum of 1 terabyte via microSD card.

Large battery, good features

The battery, which has been taken over from the Pro model, is lush. It has a capacity of 5,000 mAh, but can be charged with a maximum of 18 watts via USB-C – the Pro had 33 watts.

NFC, 5G in dual-SIM mode, Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac are also supported. In addition, the Poco M4 5G offers a 3.5 mm jack for connecting with headphones, a fingerprint sensor on the side and supports face unlocking via AI.

The cameras with a strong downgrade

On the other hand, the camera setup is very questionable. Poco had already introduced the M4 5G in April for the Indian market. And it did so with significantly stronger cameras than the now unveiled global version.

While the main camera on the Indian variant resolves at 50 megapixels, you’ll have to settle for a mere 13 MP globally. The aperture is also considerably lower at f/2.2 (compared to f/1.8).

On the other hand, the 2-MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4 has been taken over, but it’s hardly worth mentioning anyway. Another downgrade is the selfie camera, which only has a resolution of 5 MP instead of 8 megapixels – but it has a slightly wider aperture (f/2.2 compared to f/2.45). The M4 5G records videos in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) at a maximum of 30 frames per second.

Price and availability

The manufacturer has not yet revealed when and at what price the Poco M4 5G will launch in Germany. In India, at least 15,999 Indian rupees will be due, which is equivalent to about 198 Euros.
