Polestar 3: Bullish E-SUV starts from 89,900 euros

As promised about two weeks ago, Polestar unveiled its new Polestar 3 e-SUV at a live event in Copenhagen on October 12 and named the official prices. The electric motor produces up to 517 hp, and a range of up to 610 kilometers is offered – starting at 89,900 euros.

Concrete details are finally available on the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV, in which the manufacturer aims to combine Scandinavian minimalism and purism with the key characteristics of a sport utility vehicle and modern technology.

“The Polestar 3 is a high-performance electric SUV that appeals to all the senses with a distinctive, Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics,” says Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar.

Visually, the e-SUV comes across as rather beefy and relies on a new aerodynamic profile that is intended to retain the typical features of an SUV but make the electric car significantly more streamlined. This is made possible, for example, by an aero wing integrated directly into the hood and an aero blade at the rear of the Polestar 3.

In the interior, the manufacturer focuses on sustainability, which they combine with a high-quality look and an appealing feel. This includes, for example, “bio-attributed” MicroTech, animal welfare-certified leather and fully traceable covers made of wool.

Long range dual motor with power and range

For the brand launch, they are equipping the five-seater Polestar 3 with a Long Range Dual engine. It has all-wheel drive and produces 360 kW (around 490 hp), as well as 840 Nm of torque.

This is said to enable acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, with the E-SUV reaching a maximum top speed of 210 km/h. Polestar also offers a performance package as an option, which comes at an extra cost of 6,600 euros. It increases power to 380 kW (517 hp), torque to 910 Nm and improves acceleration to 100 km/h to 4.7 seconds.

The e-car draws energy from a 400V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 111 kWh, giving it a range of up to 610 kilometers according to WLTP.

The lithium-ion battery features a prismatic cell design housed in a protective aluminum case with boron steel reinforcement and liquid cooling. A standard heat pump helps the Polestar 3 use ambient heat for climate and battery conditioning.

Also offered, as for example in the upcoming Volvo EX90, is bidirectional charging. This enables the E-SUV to supply a house or other electrical appliances with electricity. In the future, it will also be possible to use vehicle-to-grid and plug-and-charge.

Safety and technology

Volvo is a good keyword, because Polestar collaborated with the manufacturer from Sweden for the E-SUV and implemented the advanced safety systems, for example. Among other things, the Polestar 3 relies on radar sensors in the interior that can detect movements in the submillimeter range.

This prevents children or pets from being unintentionally left inside the vehicle. The system is also linked to the air conditioning system to prevent heat stroke or hypothermia.

As standard, the Polestar 3 has a total of five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors that support numerous advanced safety functions. The SmartZone under the front aero wing, which houses multiple forward-facing sensors, a heated radar module and a camera, is becoming a hallmark of the Polestar design.

Inside, they’re installing closed-loop driver monitoring cameras with eye-tracking technology that automatically detects fatigue, for example, and activates alerts, tones and even an emergency braking function if necessary.

Infotainment and features

For the infotainment system, the Polestar 3 uses a 14.5-inch display based on Android Automotive OS and relies on the Snapdragon Cockpit platform. Premium-quality surround sound and seamless connectivity throughout the vehicle are promised.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates allow for continuous software improvements and the introduction of new features without having to visit a service point.

The rest of the features are also impressive. All versions feature air suspension, a full-length panoramic glass roof, full LED lighting inside and out, retractable door handles with proximity sensors and 21-inch alloy wheels.

In the first model year, the Plus Package and Pilot Package are also standard equipment. They include a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, 3D surround sound and Dolby Atmos, soft-closing doors, a head-up display and Pilot Assist.

Price and Availability

The new Polestar 3 E-SUV with Long Range Dual Motor is now available online for configuration and pre-order from the manufacturer. The introductory price starts from 89,900 euros.
