Polestar O₂: Sports car study with integrated drone

Polestar has unveiled an extremely exciting concept car. With the Polestar O₂, the Swedish e-car manufacturer wants to redefine nothing less than the “sports car roadster for the electric age”. A real innovation here is likely to be the integrated video drone with its own launch and landing platform.

The “Hero Car” from Polestar

Thomas Ingenlath, for his part CEO of the car company, clarifies that the Polestar O₂ is to be the Swedish brand’s new “Hero Car”. Further, he describes it as follows:

“It hints at the extent of our potential and is a taste of what we can design and develop with the talent and technology we have pooled in-house. Not only does it look incredible, but the ability to lower the roof without hearing an engine promises a great driving experience.”

Dynamic driving

The company describes the chic roadster’s handling as “lively, light and confident.” Above all, the customized aluminum platform is said to ensure that the Polestar O₂ is firmly connected to the road. We already know this from the Polestar 5. In particular, the company emphasizes the cornering position. In combination with the immediate steering feel, driving fun seems to be pre-programmed. In terms of design, the Polestar O₂ is beyond reproach.

Here, connoisseurs of the brand will feel reminded of the Polestar Precept – another concept car from the Swedes. According to the company itself, it has made every effort to maintain the design language of the other models. Judging by the first pictures, the carmaker has certainly succeeded in doing so.Here you can definitely recognize the brand. Looking at the photos, however, it also becomes clear that this is by no means a family car. The Polestar O₂ is said to have two front and two rear seats.

In the sports roadster sector, however, anything else would have been surprising. When it comes to design, the company also goes into raptures about the car’s aerodynamics. Integrated wind tunnels are supposed to unobtrusively ensure that the vehicle experiences the lowest possible drag. Air flows are then to be guided out again via the wind tunnels at the front, with as little turbulence as possible at the rear. One highlight, however, is certainly the fact that the roadster’s roof should be able to open and close silently.

Focus on sustainability

If you want to survive in the electric car market, you should also score points with a sustainable concept if possible. Simply turning away from the conventional combustion engine is no longer enough. Polestar has understood this and focuses on sustainable materials apart from the electric motor. For example, the Swedes mainly use thermoplastic monomaterials in the vehicle’s interior.

The idea behind this is to use only one basic material to prevent the waste of raw materials. In the Polestar O₂, for example, recycled polyester is to be used. This is not only intended to be environmentally friendly, but also to reduce the weight of the vehicle. The bodywork, in turn, is made of different types of aluminum. Appropriate labeling of each individual component is intended to facilitate subsequent reuse.

Video drone behind the rear seats

What rather reminds of a small technology gimmick of Tesla is the drone, which Polestar wants to place behind the rear seats. This is supposed to be able to be flown while driving in order to record footage of the driving sequence. To make this possible, the car is said to have its own mini-platform that serves as the drone’s takeoff and landing point.

To ensure that the drone is not pushed away by the airstream, Polestar has developed a vacuum technology that ensures a firm footing. Thus, speeds of up to 90 km/h should be possible without any problems. Once at home, the 15-inch display in the cockpit can be used to edit the videos immediately. This all sounds too good to be true. We are curious if and when we will be able to see production-ready pictures of the sports roadster.
