Potentially unwanted apps will soon be blocked automatically in Windows 10

Since May 2020, Microsoft has offered the option to block potentially unwanted apps in Windows 10 as a precaution. Soon, this feature should be enabled by default.

Not malware

These applications are not malware, but for example those that slow down the PC or produce penetrating advertisements. These applications are detected via Reputation-Based Protection. The function itself is called “reliability-based protection” in the German version and currently still has to be activated manually.

For users of the Edge browser, there is also the option to detect such apps during the download process. If this happens, a warning message is issued, whereupon the download can be stopped.

Function can be deactivated

However, enabling the feature will not be mandatory, so no app will be banned from Windows devices in general. The change merely aims to ensure that it is enabled by default in the future, whereas it is disabled by default today. It can be disabled where it can be enabled today – in the app and browser control, which is accessible via the system settings under the item Security.
