PS5: First pictures of the controller of the upcoming VR system

Sony already dropped the bombshell in February. Although it was assumed that the PlayStation 5 would do without a VR system for the time being, the company proved industry experts wrong. And the path to virtual reality for the new home console seems to be comparatively fast. After all, the Japanese company has already published the first pictures of the new VR controller. We take a closer look at this one.

Adaptive Trigger

A unique selling point of the PlayStation 5 is definitely the controller. While the competition from Microsoft also relies on classic gamepads in their Xbox Series X/S, Sony introduced revolutionary adaptive triggers. These give the player feedback, which is an impressive experience, especially in shooters. It is therefore not surprising that the Japanese also rely on the adaptive triggers for the control units of the new VR system. But the changes to the first-generation PSVR are not over yet. On top of that, it will no longer be possible to play games with only one controller. The use of one controller per hand is supposed to ensure maximum immersion.

Strongly revised design

But it’s not just the control option itself that Sony has apparently rethought. The general design of the controller can also hardly be compared to the previous models. For example, the company still relied on a rather cylindrical design for the Move controllers, which was also used in the classic “Nintendo Wii”. The new PSVR version is supposed to use a control unit that is more reminiscent of a ball. The two controllers are tracked with the help of the arm strap. The futuristic design is appealing. Movements should not only be detected by the two controllers. Of course, the movement of the heart, the new headset, is also tracked. Unfortunately, there is no more information about this yet.

The basic idea of the controller is very reminiscent of the Joy-Cons of the Nintendo Switch. Thus, both PSVR controllers have an analog stick and two buttons each. On top of that, there is a trigger and a so-called grip button, which is supposed to be located directly on the ball of the hand. In addition, each controller is supposed to have a function button. It will probably be some time before we can hold the controllers in our hands. After all, the company has announced that it will first make the controllers available to developers in order to design suitable game concepts.

Features of the Dualsense 5

It is commendable to mention that Sony has taken the positive feedback on its Dualsense 5 to heart. Thus, the latest generation PSVR controller is also said to rely on force feedback and state-of-the-art vibration motors. The adaptive triggers mentioned at the beginning should also become a real guarantee for gaming fun.

Upgrading the controllers was more than just necessary. After all, in contrast to the first-generation PSVR, these now look very outdated. This is especially noticeable in the area of accuracy. In “stressful” games like Resident Evil 7, this can lead to real moments of frustration.

Release of PSVR “2.0” still uncertain

It is a bit surprising that Sony announced the new VR system back in February and is now already coming around the corner with first images of the controllers. However, since there is still no solid info on the actual headset itself, this seems to be a lot of PR strategy. Maybe the negative headlines about the “delivery bottlenecks” of the PS5 were a reason for the company to send out positive news for once. By the way, those who cannot wait until the release can also gamble on the brand-new PlayStation 5 with the first-generation PSVR. The suitable adapter is available from Sony.
